Key Responsibilities- Establish and maintain a sterile field and safe environment throughout surgical procedures
- Assess instrumentation and equipment needs and anticipate and provide instrumentation and equipment needs for the surgeon's use in a timely manner
- Perform and/or provide scrub assistance during procedures, demonstrating awareness of anatomy, necessary principles, skills, supplies, and adequate knowledge base
- Assist the circulating nurse in implementing the perioperative plan of care, including patient positioning, confirmation/preparation of operative site, updating physician preference card, care of operative specimens, and room turnover
- Demonstrate the application of the principles of asepsis and adhere to unit-specific standards, policies, and procedures for aseptic techniques
- Select proper sterilization method of instruments/equipment and verify instruments are sterile
- Take corrective action when any unsafe practice, conditions, or breaks in aseptic technique occur and report information to the circulating nurse
- Assist with pulling cases and checking case cart for completeness, obtaining supplies and equipment, and determining them to be in good working order before a case begins
- Prepare the operating room by opening sterile supplies, instruments, and sutures based on scheduled procedure and surgeon preference card
- Follow policies for scrubbing, gowning, gloving, setting up back table, draping, and counting with the circulating nurse
- Anticipate the needs of the surgeon, including passing instruments, sutures, and other items appropriate to the procedure
- Establish and maintain an organized sterile field
- Assist the surgeon by retracting tissue, holding instrumentation to provide exposure, and cutting suture under the direct supervision of the surgeon
- Graduate of an accredited Surgical Technologist program
- BLS certification
- Pertinent to OR and Central Supply, effective communication skills, and ability to work with others within a team to ensure quality patient care
