Overview

Compensation: Hourly rate of $43.11 upon fulfilling progression step criteria. Departmental Context

The Building Performance Services division encompasses five specialized units: Construction Quality Assurance, Asset Management, Central Control, Facility Information Services, and Building Systems Efficiency. This role is situated within the Construction Quality Assurance unit, tasked with ensuring that new construction and renovation initiatives are executed in alignment with the owner's objectives.

Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct trade-specific design evaluations, construction inspections, contractor coordination support, and resolution of warranty phase issues related to fire alarm and life safety systems.
  • Participate in design review processes typically during the construction document phase, with potential involvement in pre-design and schematic/design development stages.
  • Perform construction inspections to ensure quality assurance at the equipment and system levels, confirming compliance with university standards, relevant codes, and regulations.
  • Review construction project blueprints and specifications, utilizing project management software (PlanGrid and Unifier) for effective communication with construction teams and documentation of issues.
  • Maintain ongoing communication with various MSU IPF Maintenance Shops (Electrical, Plumbing, Steam, HVAC, Fire Alarm, etc.) to provide necessary support.

Regular attendance is essential to meet operational and customer service needs.

Qualifications

  • Associate's degree or an equivalent combination of technical training and experience.
  • A minimum of eight years of experience, including at least three years in the skilled trades field of life safety systems, electronics, or a related area.
  • Proficient in word processing, project planning, work order, and database software.
  • Expertise in blueprint interpretation and compliance enforcement with MSU construction standards.
  • In-depth knowledge of methods, materials, tools, equipment, occupational hazards, and safety protocols relevant to the trade.
  • Familiarity with applicable codes, rules, and regulations (local, state, and federal), including the National Electrical Code.
  • Possession of a valid driver's license and the ability to operate a university vehicle for job-related duties.
  • Basic understanding of personal computer terminology and operations, with the capability to use email and the Internet.

Preferred Qualifications

Possession of a Journeyman or Master Electrician's license, NICET Fire Alarm Level III certification, or State of Michigan FAST (Fire Alarm Specialty Technician) license. Proven ability to communicate effectively with peers, contractors, and management. Capability to apply for and be recognized by the Michigan Bureau of Fire Services as a qualified individual for fire alarm systems.
