This role involves a flexible work schedule of no more than 30 hours per week, primarily on weekends, subject to departmental needs.

The City of Lakewood is actively seeking variable employees for this role. A variable employee is classified as an at-will worker who operates in a seasonal or temporary capacity, with their work schedule determined by business requirements. This position is part-time and does not include benefits.

Primary Responsibilities: The main responsibility of this position is to receive, assess, and respond appropriately to citizens reporting criminal activities and other incidents, utilizing both telephone and in-person communication to document information in an official police report clearly and concisely. This task requires timely input of information into the appropriate reporting system template via computer.

Moreover, the Patrol Operations Technician (POT) often serves as the initial point of contact for the public regarding criminal-related matters. Therefore, the POT must consistently display a professional and positive demeanor when interacting with individuals, even those who may express frustration towards law enforcement. Addressing public concerns necessitates a sympathetic and caring approach, especially in stressful situations, whether through face-to-face or telephone interactions.
The position involves conducting queries on the NCIC/CCIC system and effectively communicating and collaborating with Police dispatch personnel and Police Records Technicians to ensure accurate and timely information is relayed appropriately.

Essential Functions:

  • Completes official police reports as mandated by classifying crimes and documenting information using the NICHE and CAD reporting systems. Reports are generated for various crime categories, including but not limited to Theft, Burglary, Criminal Mischief, Missing Persons, and more. Screens information from callers to determine the necessity of a police report or police response.
  • Conducts interviews with victims and witnesses who may be distressed or in crisis, ensuring confidentiality in accordance with departmental guidelines.
  • Assists law enforcement agents by querying license plates in the CCIC/NCIC system for parking ticket completion.
  • Coordinates with Police Records personnel by entering identifying information into the NCIC/CCIC system regarding various crimes and incidents.
  • Maintains knowledge of state and municipal statutes and traffic laws to accurately determine the nature of crimes for reporting purposes.
  • Prepares to testify in court using information gathered from victim and suspect interviews during the initial police report process.
  • Engages in continuous learning by reading department manuals and newsletters to maintain job knowledge.
  • May assist in training co-workers.

  • Collaborates effectively with peers to distribute daily tasks and communicate efficiently.
  • Greets and assists visitors to the Public Safety Center.
  • Handles telephone inquiries and directs calls to the appropriate department.
  • Prioritizes duties and manages multiple tasks during busy periods.
  • Assists with various tasks as assigned by supervisors.

Essential Qualifications:

Education:
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
Experience:
  • Six months of clerical experience.
  • Preferred law enforcement experience.
  • Proficient in computer applications (Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint).
  • Ability to type at least 30 words per minute is preferred.
License/Certification/Registration:
  • Ability to obtain NCIC/CCIC certification.

  • Exceptional communication and customer service skills; maintains a courteous demeanor.
  • Ability to accurately record and organize information for official police documentation.
  • Excellent telephone etiquette.
  • Capable of working independently while also collaborating in a team environment.

  • Ability to work a flexible schedule; shift work is required.
  • Exercises common sense and good judgment in decision-making.
  • Typing speed of 40 words per minute.
  • Bi-lingual (English/Spanish) ability is a desired qualification.
  • Completion of oral board interview, polygraph, background investigation, and drug testing is required.
