Position Overview

The Procurement Specialist will be tasked with the critical role of establishing and overseeing contracts with primary suppliers. This position involves the development of cost-effective sourcing strategies aimed at optimizing overall expenditure. The specialist will evaluate the total cost of ownership for materials and manage various material functions, including purchasing, production scheduling, inventory oversight, and global sourcing.

Key Responsibilities

  • Utilize SAP and other relevant tools to procure materials essential for production.
  • Assess requirements for finished goods, prioritize supplier shipments, and establish timelines for material availability.
  • Lead and refine planning processes that support all value streams.
  • Engage in negotiations with suppliers based on factual data and assist the materials manager in executing long-term supplier agreements in accordance with corporate policies.
  • Gather, prepare, and analyze market trends to inform strategic sourcing initiatives.
  • Support the materials manager in defining and implementing a strategic sourcing framework that meets internal demands while maximizing supplier value.
  • Monitor KPI performance and other metrics, discussing variances with the materials manager.
  • Identify cost-saving opportunities, ensure successful implementation, and report progress to the materials manager.
  • Assist in cost reduction initiatives, including cost analysis and value analysis/value engineering (VA/VE).
  • Issue requests for quotations (RFQs) to vendors and follow up as necessary.
  • Communicate with suppliers regarding late deliveries.
  • Proactively track leading indicators for potential supply disruptions to meet operational needs and resolve issues promptly.
  • Compare prices, specifications, and delivery schedules, awarding contracts to bidders or placing orders with suppliers.
  • Collaborate with project teams to ensure suppliers understand company requirements and deliverables, reporting on material readiness to support project timelines.
  • Assist in reconciling purchase orders and accounts payable discrepancies with vendors.
  • Issue work orders to the production floor in alignment with manufacturing lead times and customer delivery expectations.
  • Coordinate scheduling with the Value Stream Manager and Team Lead.
  • Report on production delays and material challenges.
  • Issue subcontractual and externally processed purchase orders linked to work orders.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned.

  • In-depth knowledge of manufacturing standards and practices.
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and critical thinking skills, with the ability to gather and organize relevant information and identify underlying issues.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, capable of developing and presenting routine reports and business correspondence effectively.

  • Demonstrated flexibility and adaptability to internal processes and unexpected changes.
  • Self-directed and motivated with the ability to manage time and multiple priorities effectively.
  • Willingness to travel domestically for supplier visits and training as needed.

Qualifications

  • BA/BS Degree in Materials Management, Business Administration, or a related field, or equivalent experience.
  • A minimum of 2 years of experience in planning within a manufacturing context.

Physical Demands and Work Environment

The physical demands of this role include the ability to sit, twist, squat, reach overhead, and use hands regularly. Specific vision abilities required include close vision, distance vision, color vision, and the ability to adjust focus. The work environment may expose the employee to moving mechanical parts, fumes, airborne particles, and moderate noise levels, necessitating ear protection in certain areas.

Lifting Requirements

The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 20 pounds.
