Aquatic Safety Specialist Job Description

The Hockomock Area YMCA is seeking a highly skilled and dedicated Aquatic Safety Specialist to join our team. As a Lifeguard, you will be responsible for ensuring the safety of all swimmers in and around the aquatics area.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Prevent Accidents: Maintain a safe swimming environment by actively scanning the pool area and responding to incidents, accidents, and emergencies quickly and effectively.
  • Respond to Emergencies: Respond to any situation or emergency within 10 seconds based on training and certification, and established emergency procedures.
  • Maintain Surveillance: Constantly monitor the pool area, actively scanning the assigned zone every 10 seconds from bottom to top.
  • Ensure Pool Safety: Maintain safe swimming conditions in the pool, deck, and surrounding areas, and create a safe and positive atmosphere that promotes member safety and engagement.
  • Enforce Rules and Policies: Know, understand, and consistently enforce all rules and policies, being firm, fair, and polite when explaining rules and policies to members.
  • Provide Excellent Member Service: Provide professional and friendly service to members, greeting them and helping to answer any questions or concerns.
  • Attend Trainings and Meetings: Attend monthly in-service trainings and staff meetings, as required.
  • Conduct Chemical Tests: Conduct regular chemical tests and report any issues to the Aquatics Director.
  • Complete Incident Reports: Complete incident/accident reports immediately and submit them to the supervisor prior to the end of the shift.
  • Uphold YMCA Values: Uphold the YMCA core values of caring, honesty, respect, and responsibility by being a positive role model and displaying a positive image of the YMCA.
Requirements:
  • Certifications: Must be currently lifeguard certified (including open water) by the YMCA, American Red Cross, or other approved certifying organization.
  • Age and Eligibility: Must be 16 years of age or older, required eligibility for lifeguard certification.
  • CPR and First Aid: Must be currently certified in CPR for the Professional Rescuer, First Aid, and Oxygen Administration by a nationally approved certifying organization.
  • Communication Skills: Ability to stay calm and respond effectively in an emergency, quick, effective decision-making skills, positive, friendly attitude, and strong interpersonal skills.
  • Professionalism: Professionalism and maturity that reflects the serious nature of aquatics safety and the importance of the lifeguard's job.
