Paralegal Role within the Environmental Law Division

Position Overview: Paralegals in the Department of Law deliver essential administrative, transactional, litigation, and research assistance to legal professionals.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Facilitates case assessments by gathering pertinent information or evidence from clients and witnesses.
  • Prepares cases for legal proceedings by organizing documentation, liaising with clients and witnesses, conducting interviews, and preparing necessary exhibits.
  • Conducts legal research as instructed by attorneys, including the analysis of regulations, case law, and statutory provisions.
  • Drafts legal correspondence and documents such as case initiation forms, legal memoranda, and responses to discovery requests.
  • Retrieves court documents from dockets; electronically files pleadings, motions, briefs, and other legal documents with various courts through online systems.
  • Reviews and verifies legal motions and briefs for accuracy and compliance.
  • Acts as a communication link between the division and various stakeholders, including respondents, attorneys, courts, and clients.
  • Addresses inquiries from clients and the public.
  • Maintains, organizes, and oversees case records, ensuring current information on case status and deadlines.
  • Assists attorneys during hearings and client consultations.
  • Performs additional related duties as assigned.

The above duties are intended to outline the general nature and level of work performed by individuals in this role and may not encompass all responsibilities.

Minimum Qualifications: A Paralegal Certificate, Diploma, or Degree AND one year of paralegal experience OR an associate's degree (non-paralegal) AND two years of documented paralegal experience; OR three years of documented paralegal experience AND demonstrated proficiency with Microsoft Office applications including Word.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Certification as a Paralegal (CP) or Certified Legal Assistant (CLA) recognized by the ABA or Georgia State Bar, along with three years of paralegal experience.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office, particularly Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
  • Current notary public commission and/or willingness to obtain such certification.
  • Excellent organizational skills.
  • Strong written and verbal communication abilities.

Additional Information: A criminal background check is conducted on all candidates; employment is contingent upon satisfactory results from this investigation.
