Key Responsibilities

The Certified Medical Coder will possess comprehensive knowledge and execute all functions related to CPC coding with minimal supervision. Responsibilities include:

  • Addressing inquiries promptly and professionally, managing billing and patient concerns with courtesy.
  • Conducting thorough research to finalize the billing process, including the application of modifier 25, reviewing and adjusting the sequence of diagnosis codes, and ensuring accuracy in coding related to supervising physicians.
  • Performing patient chart audits, with each practitioner undergoing a minimum of two audits annually, and providing educational support based on audit findings.
  • Maintaining a collaborative relationship with advanced practice providers and physicians to facilitate timely responses to coding inquiries.
  • Demonstrating proficiency in processing claims for accurate medical coding related to surgical procedures and hospital services delivered by both physicians and licensed non-physician providers.
  • Reviewing ICD-10 codes in conjunction with the billing team to ensure correct coding for all service lines, rebilling Evaluation and Management codes with incorrect diagnoses, and verifying the reimbursability of selected codes.
  • Updating and distributing annual revisions to ICD-10 diagnosis codes, CPT codes, and HCPCS codes.
  • Keeping the Manager of Business Operations informed about coding changes from major commercial and government insurance carriers.
  • Staying current with medical coding regulations and compliance issues, assisting the team with challenges related to medical necessity, claims denials, bundling issues, and charge capture.
  • Providing training as necessary to support departmental functions, including review duties.
  • Managing correspondence related to patients or insurance carriers in a timely manner, including written responses when required.
  • Participating in discussions, conferences, seminars, and meetings as needed.
  • Conducting daily reviews of coded services to ensure proper coding and documentation.
  • Overseeing coding reviews with physicians to guarantee accurate documentation of billed services.
  • Distributing coding information to relevant personnel and addressing any questions regarding new or questionable coding items.

Qualifications

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: Familiarity with the medical insurance industry, relevant laws, regulations, and operational procedures is preferred. Proficiency in filing and collecting insurance claims is desired. A strong understanding of ICD-10 and CPT coding, along with medical terminology, is essential. Skills in problem identification, investigation, and error correction are required, as well as proficiency in computer applications. The ability to maintain effective working relationships with patients, staff, and the public is crucial.

Education: High School Diploma

Experience: A minimum of two years of experience as a CPC in a physician or hospital environment.

Certification: Current CPC certification is required.
