A skilled Pharmacy Technician III plays a vital role in the pharmacy operations at TriHealth. Under the direct supervision of a registered pharmacist, this healthcare professional assists in the distribution of medications to patients in the hospital, including inpatient and outpatient units, emergency room, and operating room.
The distribution of medications involves selecting, counting, compounding, packing, labeling, and delivering medications. A Pharmacy Technician III is responsible for the preparation of sterile compounds, including chemotherapy and hazardous substances, and maintaining the sterile environment in the IV Room.
Proficiency in accessing and viewing the electronic health record and pharmacy automated systems is essential for this role. Employees must work in multiple areas of the pharmacy to maintain competency and broaden skills for all areas of the job scope.
Job Requirements:
- High School Degree or GED
- Active National Pharm Tech Cert (CPhT)
- Approved cert is through Pharm Tech Cert Board (PCTB) and ExCPT Cert by the National Healthcareer Association
- Active registration with the Ohio Board of Pharmacy as a Certified Pharmacy Technician
- Must be able to compound sterile products and maintain a sterile environment
- Up to 1 year experience Technical Pharmacy Experience is required to be eligible to move into the Pharmacy Technician III position
Job Responsibilities:
- Assists the pharmacist in the preparation, dispensing, and distribution of compounded sterile products, including chemotherapy and hazardous medications, while following current guidelines and policy (USP 797, USP 800, ASHP, NIOSH, and Board of Pharmacy laws and regulations) and department procedures.
- Performs hand hygiene and garbing and cleaning and disinfecting of the hoods and room according to policy and keeps accurate cleaning logs.
- Prioritizes IV medication production appropriately and disposes of IV and chemotherapy/hazardous waste.
- Adheres to all safety requirements when handling, preparing, labeling, and disposing of chemotherapy and hazardous medications.
- Assists in non-sterile medication preparation by selecting, counting, compounding, packaging, scanning, labeling, filling, and delivering medications per department guidelines.
- Selects the appropriate medications and accurately labels.
- Weighs, measures, and mixes ingredients by using proper calculations, equipment, and technique.
- Works Automated Dispensing Machine, able to load/refill/unload, outdate, and resolve discrepancies.
- Accurately and efficiently transports medications from the pharmacy to areas outside of the pharmacy (tubing, cart delivery, IV Run, STAT, etc.).
- Responsible for maintaining an accurate controlled substances (CII-CV) inventory and for reviewing and maintaining controlled substance records.
- Immediately reports unresolved controlled discrepancies to a supervisor.
- Optimizes workflow by efficiently and accurately completing job duties and prioritizing workload.
- Has a good overall job knowledge and uses good technical and procedural judgment.
- Assists with other duties as necessary for efficient pharmacy operations.
- Shows initiative and flexibility in carrying out day-to-day tasks.
- Utilizes appropriate and logical problem-solving techniques.
- Identifies critical issues and communicates to appropriate personnel in a timely manner.
- Appropriately uses pharmacy technology.
- Follows department standards of work, policies, and workflows.
- Maintains the pharmacy automation (changing consumables, cleaning, etc.).
