Role Responsibilities:

CLASSIFICATION: Special Education Bus Attendant
Salary Range: 27

GROUP: Transportation

Position Summary:

The Special Education Bus Attendant is responsible for guiding and reinforcing appropriate bus riding conduct and may execute specific behavioral modification strategies with students during transit to and from educational facilities.

Key Duties:

1. Accompany an assigned bus route, sitting alongside students during their journey to and from school.
2. Assist students from the bus to the classroom upon arrival and vice versa during departure, as necessary.
3. Educate and reinforce suitable bus riding behaviors, including safety protocols and courteous conduct.
4. Implement tailored behavioral objectives for individual students to promote appropriate bus riding habits.
5. Document student performance on the bus for regular reporting to parents and educators.
6. Conduct bus maintenance tasks such as cleaning windows, removing trash, and sanitizing seating areas as required.
7. Perform additional duties as necessary to fulfill the responsibilities of the role.

Qualifications:

Knowledge:
• Understanding of policies and procedures for instructing and enforcing appropriate bus riding behavior.
• Ability to foster positive relationships with a small group of children.
• Familiarity with behavior management techniques.

Skills:
• Demonstrated patience and composure to effectively monitor and manage the behavior of children, including those with special needs.
• Capability to maintain basic records to report on student performance consistently.

Training and Experience:
• A high school diploma or GED is mandatory. Previous experience working with children in informal group settings is preferred. Basic reading and writing skills are essential for report preparation.

• Required certifications include TB test clearance, criminal justice fingerprint clearance, and a valid first aid and CPR certification.

Physical Requirements:
• Ability to lift, carry, push, or pull items weighing up to 100 pounds.
• Frequent bending, kneeling, squatting, or crouching is necessary.
• Sufficient finger dexterity to secure harnesses and seat belts and to fasten wheelchairs to the bus.
• Effective hearing and speaking skills for communication in person and via radio.
• Capability to operate bus doors through reaching, pulling, and pushing.
• Maintain balance while standing on a moving bus.
• Visual acuity to read various materials and assist students.
• Strength and dexterity to assist children in emergencies.
• Ability to climb a minimum of 5 steps to enter and exit the bus.
