Position Summary

The Student Support Services initiative is dedicated to fostering the academic success of undergraduate students at the University of Central Oklahoma, particularly those who are first-generation college attendees, individuals with financial needs, or those with disabilities. This role provides undergraduate or graduate students with invaluable work experience that is essential for pursuing careers in higher education, student affairs, and TRIO programs. The Program Assistant is expected to commit to 15-20 hours of work per week while maintaining a minimum GPA of 2.50 and being enrolled in at least half-time credit hours during the fall and spring semesters. The Student Support Services program is designed to assist first-generation students from diverse academic backgrounds.

Weekly Hours
  • 20 hours per week (flexible scheduling available)
  • The SSS Office operates Monday - Friday from 8 AM - 5 PM
  • This position primarily requires in-person attendance, with opportunities for after-hours and weekend work
Department Overview

Participants in the Student Support Services program benefit from tailored coaching services, including academic advising, financial aid guidance, FAFSA assistance, financial literacy workshops, tutoring, peer mentoring, study skills development, graduate preparation, research opportunities, cultural events, and grant aid for eligible students.

Key Responsibilities

Under the supervision of the Project Director and Retention Coordinator, the Program Assistant will:
  • Assess eligible participants, conduct intake interviews, administer evaluations, and create Individual Learning Plans
  • Maintain and monitor participant records using a secure electronic database
  • Provide academic advisement, financial aid counseling, and personal coaching in both individual and workshop formats
  • Document services provided to each student to track and evaluate program objectives and outcomes
Additional Responsibilities
  • Participate in monthly SSS program and staff meetings, as well as training sessions
  • Engage in TRIO Workshops and other relevant programming to support SSS participants
  • Attend mandatory training and events that align with federal program goals
  • Be available for evening and weekend work as necessary
Application Instructions

Applicants selected for an interview will be required to deliver a brief presentation on their views regarding the challenges faced by first-generation and low-income students in achieving a four-year degree.

Enrollment Criteria

Fall/Spring Semesters: All student employees must be enrolled at least half-time to qualify for any student position. Half-time enrollment is defined as 5 credit hours for graduate students and 6 credit hours for undergraduates. International students must maintain full-time enrollment to be eligible for student employment. Full-time enrollment is 9 credit hours for graduates and 12 credit hours for undergraduates.

Summer Semester: Student employees in regular positions must be enrolled in a minimum of 3 credit hours to work during the summer. Students not enrolled in summer courses must be registered for fall classes to be eligible for campus employment, and both the student and the department will be responsible for FICA taxes. Student employees in Federal Work Study positions must be enrolled in at least 6 credit hours (undergraduate) or 5 credit hours (graduate) during the summer.

Current enrollment as an undergraduate or graduate student at UCO.
