Key Responsibilities:

  • Oversee the preparation of journal entries, accounting analyses, and monthly reconciliations, ensuring adherence to departmental standards. Scrutinize financial data, journal entries, and accounting reports to guarantee accuracy, timely processing, and compliance with generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP) and regulatory requirements. Provide guidance and mentorship to accounting staff.
  • Lead initiatives to deliver additional accounting support for various activities, including routine and ad hoc financial analyses and reporting (including SEC reporting), the implementation of new accounting processes, and compliance activities.
  • Prepare and review financial statements, accompanying notes, and other reports for entities managed by Oglethorpe, ensuring compliance with GAAP and regulatory standards. Conduct variance analysis and provide explanations as necessary.
  • Compile documentation for internal and external auditors and engage in business process walkthroughs.
  • Develop and maintain documentation for significant business processes, accounting policies, and job responsibilities.

Qualifications:

  • Education: Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Business, or a related field.
  • Experience: Minimum of 6 years of progressive general accounting experience.
  • Equivalent Experience: At least 3 years of experience in public accounting.
  • Skills: Strong communication abilities across all organizational levels. Proficient in Microsoft Office and familiar with general ledger accounting systems and reporting tools. Capable of managing multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Preferred Experience: Experience in the utilities sector, particularly with Power Plan, FERC accounting, or RUS reporting.
  • Certifications: CPA certification is required.

Work Schedule: This position may require unusual hours, including additional hours and/or weekend work during month-end and quarter-end closes, with increased hours during year-end close and audit periods. Additional hours may also be necessary for system upgrades or conversions.
