Job Overview

Salary: $20 - $30 per hour

The ideal candidate will possess substantial expertise in the installation, termination, and testing of structured cabling systems within commercial settings. This role involves configuring, installing, maintaining, troubleshooting, and planning Wide Area Network (WAN), Local Area Network (LAN), as well as wireless, wired, and voice telecommunication systems. Familiarity with BICSI standards for proper installation and termination practices is essential. The position also requires the ability to mentor and oversee apprentices in a collaborative environment while facilitating the installation of cabling and electronic systems. A commitment to safety, quality, productivity, and adherence to schedules is critical in all tasks performed. Employees are expected to demonstrate dedication to excellence and produce high-quality work consistently. Punctuality and teamwork are vital for achieving shared objectives, along with maintaining a safe workplace.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Install video and data cabling using Cat 5E, Cat 6a, and fiber optic cables.
  • Terminate and test horizontal copper cables (Cat 5e, Cat 6a).
  • Perform fiber optic terminations.
  • Install patch panels and label horizontal cabling.
  • Manage the installation of backbone and riser cabling (both copper and fiber).
  • Install interior conduit, Panduit, and Wiremold.
  • Interpret and understand plans and specifications.
  • Set up plywood and racks for installations.
  • Install cable trays in telecommunications rooms (TC), main distribution frames (MDF), and intermediate distribution frames (IDF).
  • Assist with outside plant (OSP) installations.
  • Pull cables, including 100 pair or smaller, independently.
  • Install prefabricated assemblies without assistance.
  • Support in pulling various sizes of cables.
  • Install pull and junction boxes up to 24" x 24".
  • Assist with exterior underground layouts.
  • Help with interior overhead and underfloor raceway layouts for telecommunications.
  • Conduct Operational Risk Management Briefings for mastered tasks.
  • Contribute to an Activity Hazard Analysis for mastered tasks.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve issues with Cat 5, 5E, and Cat 6a cabling.
  • Terminate various manufacturers' copper termination blocks.
  • Possess knowledge of all fiber termination connectors.
  • Mentor apprentices in the field.

Experience Required:

  • A minimum of 7 years of experience in the commercial communications sector, including experience in room build-outs, Cat6, Cat6A, and fiber optic terminations, as well as the ability to interpret and maintain drawings and as-builts. Proficient in testing, troubleshooting, and repairing copper and fiber optic cabling.

Qualifications:

  • Valid driver's license is required.
  • Must successfully pass a criminal background check and drug screening.
  • Willingness to work throughout the Houston area.
  • Reliable transportation is necessary.
  • Availability for a flexible work schedule as needed.

Physical Abilities:

  • Ability to lift up to 75 pounds and maintain the ability to lift 50 pounds for extended periods.
  • Capable of utilizing and moving a 10-12 foot stepladder without assistance.
  • Comfortable working at heights up to 60 feet and maintaining balance on scaffolds, aerial lifts, catwalks, and various ladders.
  • Full range of motion including bending, stooping, crouching, kneeling, turning, twisting, crawling, squatting, walking, climbing, pushing, pulling, and reaching overhead regularly.
  • Good vision, with the ability to distinguish colors, shades, and brightness.
  • Ability to communicate effectively in English at a conversational level.
  • Compliance with all OSHA safety regulations.
