Position Overview:
The Cardiac Monitoring Specialist is responsible for overseeing, documenting, and interpreting the electrocardiogram (ECG) readings of patients on telemetry systems. This role is crucial in identifying and reporting arrhythmias to the medical or nursing teams. The Centralized Telemetry unit aims to enhance cardiac monitoring and ensure the safety of patients requiring continuous observation. Skilled technicians will deliver this vital surveillance, promptly notifying nursing staff of any significant changes in a patient's cardiac rhythm.

Supervision:
This position operates under the guidance of the Director of Med-Surg/ICU and the Med-Surg Charge RN. The Cardiac Monitoring Specialist must possess the physical capabilities necessary to fulfill the job requirements effectively. Adherence to all policies outlined in the Employee Handbook is essential, as is support for the unit management team in achieving quality outcomes, patient satisfaction, staff development, and fostering a collaborative work environment.

Compliance:
All employees at Reeves County Hospital are expected to perform their duties in accordance with hospital policies, as well as comply with relevant accrediting organizations, federal and state regulations, and guidelines from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS).

Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or GED.
  • Experience in healthcare; cardiac monitoring experience is preferred.
  • Strong communication skills.
  • Successful completion of a telemetry course within six weeks of hire.

Key Responsibilities:

  1. Operate advanced cardiac monitoring systems, including ECG rhythm screens and computerized dysrhythmia detection tools.
  2. Manage patient admissions and discharges in the cardiac monitoring system as per physician directives.
  3. Observe and document ECG monitor readings according to established protocols, relaying critical information to the appropriate staff.
  4. Maintain and clean equipment, reporting any malfunctions to the designated Biomedical personnel.
  5. Set up the central monitoring station, manage alarms, troubleshoot false alarms, and ensure proper lead placement.
  6. Assist in rhythm interpretation and dysrhythmia detection, labeling monitor strips to indicate significant events.
  7. Conduct alarm management, notifying nursing staff of rhythm changes as per established protocols.
  8. Print rhythm strips every four hours for patient charts, ensuring timely interpretation by the charge RN or primary nurse.
  9. Follow infection control policies by cleaning telemetry equipment after use.
  10. Foster a collaborative and cooperative work environment.
  11. Document all relevant information clearly and accurately.
  12. Assist in emergency operational procedures, including patient evacuation during disasters.
  13. Participate in the orientation and training of new staff members.
  14. Act as a resource for staff within the scope of practice.
  15. Engage in educational initiatives and quality improvement projects.
  16. Communicate effectively with physicians, supervisors, co-workers, patients, and families.
  17. Maintain positive relationships with all team members.
  18. Participate actively in unit meetings and training sessions.
  19. Support the Charge Nurse or Unit Director in staff scheduling to ensure adequate coverage.
  20. Take responsibility for personal and professional development.
  21. Remain calm under pressure, interpreting data and conditions accurately.
  22. Seek guidance when necessary and demonstrate flexibility in the unit and hospital settings.
  23. Perform moderately active tasks, including lifting and carrying as needed.
  24. Ensure visual acuity for preparing and reading written materials accurately.
  25. Be able to mobilize equipment weighing up to 50 pounds.
  26. Be available for overtime as required to meet unit needs.
  27. Complete additional duties and specific projects as assigned by the Charge Nurse or Unit Director.
