About the Job

We are seeking a highly skilled and detail-oriented Government Ethics Investigator to join our team at Vets Hired. As a key member of our Enforcement Unit, you will play a critical role in ensuring the integrity of Oakland's elections and the ethical functioning of its government.

Key Responsibilities
  • Assist with the Enforcement Chief's review and processing of complaints, conducting preliminary research, and recommending next steps.
  • Track complaint intake, prepare case files, draft correspondence, and maintain enforcement databases.
  • Investigate and gather factual information, interview parties, and analyze evidence to develop case recommendations.
  • Prepare written summaries of facts and initial analysis, and draft staff recommendations.
  • Respond to requests for information and assistance on matters related to the Commission's work and laws.
  • Draft and serve subpoenas, and conduct field investigations as needed.
  • Perform administrative and clerical duties as necessary to support the Enforcement Unit's work.

What You'll Need to Succeed
  • Bachelor's degree in a relevant field, such as criminal law, public policy, or journalism.
  • Three years of progressively responsible investigative experience, preferably in administrative, civil, or criminal law or investigative journalism.
  • Experience with campaign finance, lobbyist, transparency, or ethics laws and regulations is highly desirable.
  • Possession of a Juris Doctor or Master's degree, leadership or management certificates, and bilingual skills are also desirable.
