May contribute to the supervision of one or more veterinary technicians in the absence of the Director of Veterinary Care and the Vet Tech Supervisor.


ORGANIZATIONAL OVERVIEW:

Chimp Haven operates as the National Chimpanzee Sanctuary situated on 200 forested acres in northwest Louisiana. The sanctuary is dedicated to providing exceptional care for over 300 chimpanzees, the majority of whom have retired from biomedical research. Chimp Haven holds accreditations from AAALAC, GFAS, USDA, and is a member of NAPSA. THE OPPORTUNITY:
As an integral member of the veterinary team, you will deliver routine and emergency medical care for the chimpanzee population. Engage in sanctuary medicine, share your expertise, and participate in management decisions regarding the colony.

RESPONSIBILITIES AND SCOPE:
1. Medical Care and Records
Oversee the health of the colony, including diagnosis, treatment, and coordination with specialists.
Prescribe medications, conduct diagnostic procedures, perform surgeries, manage euthanasia, and maintain comprehensive records.
Participate in health programs, transportation logistics, and introductions.
Ensure adherence to regulations, train staff, and uphold safety standards.

  • Administration
Engage in regulatory compliance, attend meetings, conduct tours, and manage budgetary considerations.
Lead efforts for accreditation, monitor inventory, and supervise veterinary technicians.
Draft communications and manage grant applications.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) degree
Licensed to practice in Louisiana
A minimum of 3 years' experience in animal care
At least 2 years of supervisory experience
Demonstrated clinical and surgical veterinary skills
Strong communication and organizational abilities
Capacity to manage multiple tasks and maintain composure under pressure
PREFERRED KNOWLEDGE,

SKILLS AND ATTRIBUTES:
Clinical proficiency with non-human primates and emergency veterinary experience preferred
Post-doctoral internship or residency preferred
Experience with IACUC activities and research protocols preferred
Strong technological skills, leadership qualities, and a passion for the mission
Effective communication, collaboration, and a willingness to share knowledge
