Position Overview

The Business Insurance (BI) Subject Matter Expert (SME) provides Property and Casualty insurance solutions for Small to Medium-sized enterprises through our Broker networks, focusing on high-volume eTrade Insurance.

We are seeking an Underwriting Manager to oversee the SME portfolio, collaborating closely with the VP, SME, and engaging with brokers to deliver tailored insurance solutions. In this capacity, you will assess and evaluate risks to meet business objectives, contributing to the development and execution of strategic initiatives.

Leveraging your expertise in eTrade or digital underwriting, you will ensure that underwriting decisions and standards are consistently applied across the SME portfolio.

We are looking for a decisive and detail-oriented individual who can foster relationships both internally and externally, negotiating terms to drive positive outcomes. Your ability to independently analyze a portfolio, negotiate terms, and market our products in competitive environments will be key to the sustainable profitability and success of Travelers.

Travelers Europe currently supports flexible work arrangements, allowing employees to work on a hybrid basis as per our Hybrid Work Arrangements Policy. This policy may be modified at the Company's discretion.

This role is eligible for a new joiner bonus. If you are successfully referred by a current employee at Travelers Europe, both you and the referring employee may qualify for this bonus.

Key Responsibilities

Our core values are Commitment, Connection, Creativity, and Energy. Embracing these values will be essential for your success and will contribute to making Travelers Europe an exceptional workplace.

Define, implement, and monitor underwriting guidelines and appetite for both new and existing products in collaboration with US/CAN Select, Europe portfolio managers, and the Europe UW office. Collaborate with product development teams on coverage analysis for new or optimized products to ensure market relevance and alignment with our underwriting strategy. Ensure proper utilization of 'input' data, third-party data, and SoF to select and manage risks in an eTrade model that aligns with our target risk selection strategy. Provide underwriting guidance for referral management within the team, including information collection and risk management strategies. Identify and implement corrective actions based on portfolio analysis across SME, ensuring adherence to established rules and addressing knowledge or behavioral gaps through communication, coaching, and training. Manage profitability, growth, and retention across the portfolio while maintaining underwriting quality. Underwrite and skillfully negotiate risks to minimize exposure and maximize profitability, including Mid Term Adjustments (MTAs). Proactively manage the SME portfolio, ensuring consistent achievement of key performance indicators while targeting new business and retention opportunities. Identify and seize opportunities to expand lines of business using knowledge of products, risk characteristics, and appetite. Efficiently utilize various technology platforms to quote and bind eTrade risks. Prepare, lead, and present Underwriting Reviews for individual policies or portfolios/schemes, managing action points effectively. Cultivate and maintain relationships with internal partners across the business unit and enterprise to identify cross-selling opportunities. Foster and maintain relationships with brokers to ensure they have a thorough understanding of BI SME products and the associated goals and objectives. Develop and deliver underwriting training materials to support SME product trading in response to new products, product optimization, and underwriting strategies developed with the product portfolio owner and national underwriting officers. Provide support and collaboration across SME, offering coaching and guidance, including referrals.

To excel in this role, you will need to consistently deliver an exceptional experience in every customer interaction; connect with the right internal partners to find innovative solutions to challenges; serve as a role model; and consistently fulfill your commitments.
