BASIC FUNCTIONS

The primary role of this position is to support the administration of medications to residents as prescribed by the attending physician. This will be done under the guidance of the attending physician, nurse supervisor, charge nurse, or Director of Nursing Services. Medication administration will adhere to current federal, state, and local standards, guidelines, and regulations governing long-term care and assisted living facilities. You will be entrusted with the authority, responsibility, and accountability necessary to fulfill your assigned duties.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Report any discrepancies in medication administration.
  • Complete necessary administrative tasks, including forms, charts, and reports.
  • Prepare, administer, and document oral and/or topical medications accurately and safely.
  • Ensure that all medications brought into the facility are properly examined and identified.
  • Assist with medication documentation.
  • Verify that all medications are appropriately labeled.
  • Document and remove any medications that are discontinued.
  • Manage the return and reorder of medications as needed.
  • Measure, record, and report residents' vital signs accurately.
  • Observe and confirm that medications are ingested or applied as directed.
  • Ensure that no medication is administered without a written, signed, and dated order.
  • Follow established protocols for the storage of drugs and biologicals.
  • Participate in the development and implementation of residents' comprehensive assessments as required.
  • Be knowledgeable about common medical abbreviations, symbols, and terms related to medication administration.
  • Perform any other duties as assigned.

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE/JOB TRAINING

A minimum of a high school diploma is required.

Must be a licensed Certified Medication Aide, having successfully completed a state-approved training program and any necessary examinations in accordance with state laws.

Experience

A minimum of 6 months of experience as a Certified Nursing Assistant is required.


Specific Requirements

  • Ability to read, write, speak, and understand the English language.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age-related needs of residents.
  • Ability to interact tactfully with personnel, residents, family members, visitors, and government agencies.
  • Ability to follow both oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with other staff members.
  • Familiarity with computer systems and office equipment.
  • Must not pose a direct threat to the health or safety of others in the workplace.

Job Training: The typical duration to competently perform this job, given the minimum knowledge, skills, and abilities, is up to 3 months.


WORK ENVIRONMENT

This position involves working in various areas of the facility.

Movement is required throughout working hours, and frequent interruptions may occur.

PHYSICAL AND SENSORY REQUIREMENTS

  • Ability to relate to and work with ill, disabled, elderly, emotionally distressed, and occasionally hostile individuals.
  • Ability to concentrate and utilize reasoning skills and sound judgment.
  • May be required to assist in the evacuation of residents during emergencies.
  • Must be able to stand and/or walk 80%-100% of the time.
  • Ability to sit and stoop as necessary.
  • Must be able to lift 5 lbs. from floor to waist approximately 20% of the time and push/pull up to 30 lbs. approximately 60% of the time.
