The nurse must maintain competency in all clinic standards while upholding the mission and core values of Nebraska Hematology Oncology.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES: Provide comprehensive nursing care to patients within the defined scope of practice.

  • Supervise and delegate tasks to LPNs and clinical support personnel.
  • Administer direct patient care, preparing patients for anticancer therapies, assisting with treatment-related procedures, ensuring completion of provider orders, performing assessments, and managing medication compliance.

  • Collaborate with the healthcare team using effective communication strategies to relay focused and precise information, ensuring accuracy in executing orders.
  • Assist patients and healthcare entities with inquiries regarding health status changes and follow-up activities, including laboratory results and medication information.
  • Educate and counsel patients and families on health assessments, symptom evaluation, medication management, and when to contact the healthcare team.
  • Adhere to practice standards to promote consistency and effectiveness in achieving positive health outcomes.
  • Exhibit effective and respectful communication with patients, families, and the healthcare team.
  • Approach patient care with empathy and compassion, guiding patients through their diagnosis and the healthcare system.
  • Identify patient learning needs and tailor education to their learning styles, employing the teach-back method.
  • Support clinic quality improvement initiatives and standards of practice such as Quality Oncology Practice Initiatives (QOPI) and Oncology Nurse Society (ONS).
  • Perform additional duties as required.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS: This role involves medium work, requiring the ability to exert 20 to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 10 to 25 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force consistently to move objects, including assisting patients. Exposure to blood, waste, bodily fluids, communicable diseases, and hazardous drugs is expected, with adherence to safety standards.

EDUCATION AND LICENSURE: Must be a graduate from an accredited nursing program and hold a current Registered Nurse license in the State of Nebraska.

CERTIFICATIONS: Basic Life Support (CPR) certification is required. Oncology Certification is highly encouraged when eligible.
