POSITION SUMMARY: The role of Early Childhood Support Specialist is designed to assist in the supervision, care, and education of students with special needs within various classroom settings. This position involves implementing instructional plans, monitoring student behavior, providing essential information to school personnel, and performing clerical tasks related to the classroom.

PRIMARY DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Modifies and accommodates classroom activities and materials under the guidance of the teacher to ensure special education students can participate effectively.
  • Supports students in various settings (e.g., assisting with personal items, note-taking, building relationships, participating in field trips, and enhancing social skills).
  • Provides assistance to early childhood students with personal care needs due to medical conditions or physical limitations, enabling them to thrive in school.
  • Participates in meetings and training sessions (e.g., CPR, educational strategies, specific disability education) to stay informed about job functions and meet state requirements.
  • Collaborates with educational staff to provide necessary support and information regarding student progress as outlined in their Individual Education Program.
  • Implements behavioral strategies designed by the IEP team to meet the needs of special education students.
  • Assists students exhibiting challenging or aggressive behaviors.
  • Facilitates educational and behavioral programming under the supervision of certified staff to help students develop new skills.
  • Instructs students in various activities in both individual and group settings to achieve Individual Educational Program goals.
  • Maintains instructional materials and records to ensure the availability of resources and reliable information on student progress.
  • Supervises students during assigned periods across different school environments to ensure a safe and conducive learning atmosphere.
  • Performs additional related duties as assigned to support the effective functioning of the educational team.
EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS:
  • Relevant job experience is preferred.
  • If the school is classified as Title I, 48 hours of college credit or the ability to pass the Title I assessment test is required.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

SKILLS necessary for this role include the ability to perform multiple tasks and adapt to changing job conditions. Specific competencies required include adherence to safety practices, operation of standard office equipment, accurate record-keeping, and the use of approved crisis intervention techniques.

KNOWLEDGE required encompasses basic math, following instructions, and understanding complex written and oral directives. Key competencies include instructional procedures, age-appropriate activities, safety practices, conflict resolution, and child development stages.

ABILITY is essential for scheduling activities, collecting data, and using job-related equipment. Flexibility to work collaboratively, manage data, and operate equipment is crucial. The ability to engage with diverse individuals and problem-solve effectively is also required. Specific competencies include effective communication, maintaining confidentiality, prioritizing tasks, teamwork, and managing interruptions.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
This position involves light work, requiring the ability to exert up to 20 pounds of force occasionally and up to 10 pounds frequently. The role typically involves 80% sitting, 10% walking, and 10% standing. Visual acuity, frequent hearing and speaking, and some physical activities such as crouching, grasping, kneeling, lifting, pulling, pushing, and fine finger dexterity are necessary. The work environment is generally indoor and hazard-free.
