Job Summary

This position requires familiarity with office terminology and procedures. The General Clerk will select and implement methods from a variety of procedures, making simple adaptations and interpretations of guides and manuals as needed. The clerical steps may vary in type or sequence, depending on the task.

Key Responsibilities
  • Sort, open, and distribute incoming mail according to destination or type.
  • Distribute packages as required.
  • Bundle mail as needed by banding, bagging, or containerizing.
  • Research mail not properly addressed or coded.
  • Deliver and pick up interoffice and outgoing mail within building locations.
  • Run postage machines and prepare outgoing mail for pickup.
Additional Duties
  • Provide customer service by assisting customers with shipping or delivery issues.
  • Maintain chain of custody of accountable mail.
  • Process machinable mail (folding, inserting, sealing, and opening) as needed.
  • Follow HAZMAT procedures for handling potentially hazardous mail.
  • Process accountable mail using the accountable mail tracking system.
  • Process unidentifiable accountable mail.
  • May require opening and reading mail and forwarding to the appropriate location.
Requirements
  • High School Diploma or General Educational Development (GED) required.
  • At least 1-2 years' experience in a related field required.
  • Preferred experience working in a mail center.
  • Experience with UPS and Federal Express shipping and procedures required.
  • Knowledge of U.S. Postal regulations for dealing with incoming, outgoing, certified, registered, insured, and express mail.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Ability to perform routine tasks on special class mail and routine and repetitive tasks for long periods with minimal supervision.
  • Ability to stand, reach, and walk for long periods of time.
  • Ability to make minor decisions regarding mail issues and questions.
  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating instructions, and procedure manuals.
  • Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.
  • Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees.
  • Good reading and writing skills.
  • Ability to add and subtract two-digit numbers, multiply, and divide with 10's and 100's.
  • Ability to perform these operations using units of American money and weight measurement, volume, and distance.
  • Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
  • Basic ability to operate a computer using Microsoft Office software and accountable mail tracking system.
