Job Summary

This position is located at the U.S. Department of Health & Human Services, serving as the chief of the pediatric department. The selected individual will function as a Physician (Pediatrics) in the performance of services through health and medical care services to patients of the hospital, healthcare centers, clinics, or designated healthcare facilities, outreach clinics, and/or telehealth/telephone services.

Key Responsibilities
  • Provide Comprehensive Medical Care: Provides comprehensive medical, preventive, and therapeutic healthcare services at a primary and secondary level in the specialty of pediatrics in an inpatient, Newborn Nursery, Emergency Department, and outpatient settings.
  • Diagnose and Treat Patients: Examines and diagnoses the health-related conditions of individuals requesting care, refers individuals for consultation when appropriate, prescribes and carries out, or directs others in carrying out, appropriate therapy in compliance with approved clinical privileges.
  • Prescribe Medications and Therapies: Prescribes medications and therapies within approved clinical privileges and per standards of care of symptoms and illnesses. Monitor effectiveness of medications and therapies.
  • Supervise Pediatricians and Nurse Practitioners: Performs administrative and clinical supervision of pediatricians and pediatric nurse practitioners. Ensure completion of and monitoring of required training, orientation, peer review, ongoing and focused professional practice evaluations, and chart reviews are completed for and by staff. Initiate personnel actions including recruitment, selection, promotion, and termination of medical staff positions. Periodic professional and performance evaluation.
  • Develop and Implement Policies: In collaboration with Service Unit Leadership, directs the development of standard operation procedures and policies, including monitoring compliance and periodic review. Assists Service Unit Leadership with monitoring and developing improvement plans to medical departments in meeting Quality performance measures. Assists medical staff and Leadership in reviewing risk management issues and performing quality reviews. Collaborates with leadership to achieve and maintain certification by accrediting agencies (e.g., Joint Commission, CMS).

Measles and Rubella immunization required for selectees born after 1957 and seasonal influenza immunization is required for all staff working in Indian Health Service healthcare facilities.

COVID-19 vaccination is required for all selectees prior to entrance on duty.

The selected individual is required to obtain and maintain medical staff clinical privileges, including any licensure requirements. If privileges are not obtained or maintained during employment, the employee will be subject to adverse actions, up to and including removal from Federal service.

On-call hours or standby duty may be required.
