Job Summary

This position oversees the medication use process in collaboration with the Medical Staff and Nursing Services by organizing the processes and functions of the Pharmacy Department efficiently, economically, and professionally in accordance with Hospital and Departmental policy and applicable federal and state legal requirements.

Key Responsibilities
  • Develop and Enforce Policies: Develops and enforces policies and procedures that promote cost-effective, appropriate, and safe medication use.
  • Formulary Management: Develops and maintains a medical staff-approved formulary.
  • Medication Storage and Preparation: Supervises medication storage and preparation areas throughout the facility.
  • Procurement and Inventory: Establishes specifications for the procurement of medications, chemicals, and biologicals.
  • Medication Control and Accountability: Ensures strict control and accountability for medications dispensed to patients or distributed to floor stock.
  • Department Operations: Contributes to the quality and effective operation of the department.
  • Staff Supervision: Supervises all pharmacy personnel, including recruiting, interviewing, promoting, and terminating staff members.
  • Performance Management: Develops job descriptions and performance standards, evaluates and counsels staff on their performance, and provides for the educational needs of the pharmacy staff.
  • Financial Management: Reviews monthly financial statistics and plans expenditures within budget guidelines.
  • Reporting and Compliance: Ensures preparation and submission of patient charges and financial reports to finance in accordance with policy, administers reports, documents, payroll records, statistical surveys, and other required data, and ensures compliance with health system policies and procedures that apply to pharmacy services.
  • Regulatory Compliance: Ensures compliance with all applicable federal, state, and local laws, rules, and regulations.
  • Strategic Planning: Develops and implements a strategic plan for the pharmacy that supports the mission and goals of the organization.
  • Collaboration and Quality Improvement: Develops and implements pharmacy services in collaboration with associated department services, develops, implements, and maintains a program that improves the quality of pharmacy services and supports the quality improvement plan of the organization.
  • Committee Participation: Participates in all committees/functions required by the organization, including the Pharmacy and Therapeutics committee.
  • Community and Staff Relationships: Establishes productive, collaborative relationships with staff members and within the community.
  • Patient Care: Demonstrates competence to perform assigned patient care responsibilities in a manner that meets the age-specific and developmental needs of patients served by the department.
  • Confidentiality: Takes personal responsibility to ensure compliance with all policies, procedures, and standards as promulgated by state and federal agencies, the hospital, and other regulatory entities, and performs all duties in a manner that protects the confidentiality of patients and does not solicit or disclose any confidential information unless it is necessary in the performance of assigned job duties.
