Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled Transmission Line Design Engineer to join our team at Sargent & Lundy. As a key member of our Electric Grid Infrastructure Services group, you will be responsible for designing and developing underground transmission lines for voltages up to 500kV.

Key Responsibilities
  • Design and develop underground transmission lines, including routing, duct bank configurations, and manhole placement.
  • Conduct cost analyses, develop design criteria, and address siting and routing challenges.
  • Develop physical designs, including duct bank layouts, trenchless designs, and cable pulling calculations.
  • Perform cable selection studies, determine bonding schemes, and conduct ampacity calculations.
  • Develop riser structure configurations and structural loading.
  • Develop specifications for cable procurement, duct bank installation, and general construction.
  • Work with vendors and clients to specify transmission line components.
  • Lead a small project team of engineers, designers, and drafters.
Requirements
  • BS degree from an ABET-accredited engineering program.
  • Proficiency with CYMCAP modeling and cable tensioning calculations.
  • 5+ years of experience in underground transmission projects, observing project schedules and budget constraints.
  • Design experience incorporating code requirements, EPRI recommendations, and client requirements.
  • Cost estimate development and schedule creation and coordination.
  • Experience with XLPE cable design and preparation of specifications for installation and procurement.
  • Knowledge of design techniques, tools, and principles involved in technical plans, drawings, and models.
  • Experience in writing and providing support documentation for engineering calculations.
  • Familiarity with design codes and standards, such as NESC, EPRI Green Book, and IEC.
  • Proficiency with MS Office applications.
  • Excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Attention to detail.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Current PE license or ability to acquire one within one year.
  • Experience with High Pressure Gas Filled or High-Pressured Fluid Filled pipe type cable systems.
  • Experience with underground distribution or low voltage cable systems.
