Position Summary

The role of the Specialized Educational Support Assistant involves collaborating closely with the Special Education Director and site administrators. This position focuses on supporting certified educators in delivering tailored instruction to individual students or small groups with special educational needs. Responsibilities include preparing instructional materials and executing Individualized Education Plans (IEPs), alongside providing essential clerical assistance.

Key Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with case managers to support special education students in various classroom settings.
  • Adapt to different school sites and classrooms based on student requirements.
  • Assist in both small group and one-on-one instructional scenarios.
  • Complete necessary district training, including Crisis Prevention Intervention (CPI) and other assigned modules.
  • Maintain accurate records and data for students with IEPs.
  • Support certified staff in delivering instruction to students with identified learning challenges.
  • Engage with teachers to develop programs and materials that cater to the unique needs of special education students.
  • Help implement IEPs, including Behavior Intervention Plans and Physical Training Programs.
  • Guide students in academic, vocational, social, and personal development.
  • Monitor and assist students during various learning activities.
  • Foster a safe and positive learning environment.
  • Observe and manage student behavior according to established procedures.
  • Assist in shaping appropriate social behaviors.
  • Provide instruction in core subjects based on guidance from certified staff.
  • Handle various clerical tasks, including maintaining attendance and academic records.
  • Ensure confidentiality of student records and information.
  • Prepare instructional materials as needed.
  • Conduct student assessments and maintain related records.
  • Set up and manage special classroom equipment and learning centers.
  • Follow health and safety protocols to ensure student well-being.
  • Assist with emergency medical situations after receiving proper training.
  • Participate in staff meetings, training sessions, and parent conferences.
  • Support students with supplementary assignments and independent work.
  • Utilize sound judgment and decision-making skills in all tasks.
  • Provide tutoring to students based on established instructional objectives.
  • Assist in crisis intervention and data collection as required.
  • Help enforce classroom and school rules while observing and documenting student behavior.
  • Assist with physical support for students with mobility needs.
  • Maintain documentation of specialized health care services.
  • Deliver direct instruction to both small and large groups of students.
  • Conduct task analysis for instructional objectives as directed by certified staff.
  • Support vocational training programs and assist in training peer tutors.
  • Develop specialized teaching materials as necessary.
  • Provide remedial tutoring by identifying student needs and applying appropriate strategies.

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to perform essential job functions with mental acuity.
  • Capacity to sit or engage in various positions for extended periods.
  • Visual acuity to read educational materials and monitor student activities.
  • Auditory ability to understand speech in various environments.
  • Manual dexterity for tasks involving office equipment and instructional materials.
  • Physical capability to lift and assist students as needed.

Qualifications

  • Knowledge of child behavior and educational needs.
  • Proficiency in English and standard office equipment operation.
  • Completion of required training in Crisis Prevention Intervention (CPI).

Experience and Education

  • High School diploma or equivalent is mandatory.
  • Successful completion of a basic skills paraeducator examination.
  • Possession of 48 or more college semester units or equivalent certification.
