About the Role

We are seeking a highly motivated and compassionate Public Benefits Paralegal to join our team at Inland Counties Legal Services, Inc. (ICLS). As a Public Benefits Paralegal, you will play a critical role in ensuring that low-income individuals and families in Riverside and San Bernardino Counties have access to essential public benefits, including food stamps, disability, and unemployment benefits.

As a member of our Public Benefits team, you will work closely with experienced attorneys and paralegals to provide direct representation to clients in various administrative legal proceedings. You will also conduct outreach and intake activities in the community, including homeless shelters, encampments, and client homes, to identify individuals in need of assistance.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Represent clients in administrative legal proceedings, including CalWORKs, CalFresh, General Relief/General Assistance, CAPI, and others.
  • Conduct outreach and intake activities in the community to identify individuals in need of assistance.
  • Assess clients' eligibility for public benefits and assist them in applying for disability benefits.
  • Request and review medical records to determine whether clients have sufficient evidence to apply, maintain, or restore disability benefits with the Social Security Administration.
  • Develop and maintain relationships with community-based organizations and other stakeholders to ensure effective collaboration and coordination of services.
  • Stay up-to-date on changes in public benefits laws and regulations, and provide training and support to colleagues as needed.

Requirements:

  • 2+ years of experience in a paralegal or related role, preferably in a non-profit or public interest organization.
  • Strong knowledge of public benefits laws and regulations, including CalWORKs, CalFresh, General Relief/General Assistance, CAPI, and others.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work effectively with clients, colleagues, and community-based organizations.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and prioritize multiple tasks and deadlines.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to think critically and creatively.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and handle sensitive information with discretion.
