Your Opportunity
We are currently seeking a Cultural Resource Specialist with a focus on architectural history. This role requires an independent candidate capable of conducting research, fieldwork, and developing historic contexts, as well as evaluating properties for their eligibility for the National Register of Historic Places. The position also involves consultation and report preparation.
Your Key Responsibilities
- Conduct research and develop historic contexts.
- Prepare detailed architectural descriptions and significance evaluations.
- Engage in fieldwork activities, including photographing resources and utilizing a tablet for data collection.
- Perform archival research both online and at libraries and repositories.
- Prepare inventory forms and technical documentation.
- Facilitate consultations with state, federal, and local agencies.
- Additional responsibilities may include supporting nominations for local and National Register of Historic Places, developing historic preservation plans, creating historic structure reports, producing cultural resource education materials, and assisting with HABS/HAER documentation and mitigation planning.
- Fundamental understanding of cultural resources program management; experience with Section 106 compliance and interaction with federal agencies is advantageous; familiarity with Section 4(f) of the USDOT Act is a plus.
- Ability to work autonomously as well as collaboratively within an interdisciplinary team of cultural resources and environmental professionals.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills are essential.
- Willingness to travel as required by project needs.
- A valid driver's license and a clean driving record are required.
A graduate degree (M.A., M.S., MHC) or a certificate in public history, heritage conservation, architectural history, historic preservation, planning, or a related field that aligns with the Secretary of the Interior's Guidelines for Professional Qualification Standards for Architectural History is required.
A minimum of 2 years of experience as an architectural historian or built environment specialist in cultural resources management or a closely related field is preferred but not mandatory.
This position involves both field and office work. Field activities may expose the individual to various environmental conditions, including inclement weather, remote locations, and challenging terrains, as well as require physical tasks such as bending, stooping, carrying equipment, and prolonged standing or walking.
