Senior Automation Specialist

The Automation Engineer II will play a crucial role in the development and execution of World Class Manufacturing (WCM) initiatives, focusing on production methodologies, control systems, and distributed control system (DCS) management in alignment with CertainTeed Gypsum's Vision, Mission, Values, and Objectives (VMVO).
By utilizing engineering principles and advanced process control methodologies, this position aims to ensure that processes are optimized, capable, and under control; minimize process variations; and address special cause variations effectively.
This role will also lead the implementation and maintenance of plant automation, electrical systems, and database management, while executing capital projects as necessary.
Key Responsibilities:
- Reports directly to the Engineering Manager and/or the Electrical/Instrumentation Manager.
- Accountable for planning, assessing, organizing, and executing automation-related projects and initiatives.
- Oversees the Valmet DCS and QCS (Quality Control System)/scanner.
- Involves designing or enhancing new process control systems and maintaining existing processes; executing WCM projects; managing contractors, consultants, and suppliers; identifying new opportunities with cost/benefit analysis, and recommending efficiency improvements.
- Collaborates with managers and supervisors at both plant and corporate levels to secure necessary resources for control projects.
- Engages with consultants and suppliers to assess the compatibility of various systems and products relevant to WCM and Controls.
- Works closely with Production and Engineering Managers to coordinate production process changes and troubleshoot equipment issues.
- Manages automation projects and provides weekly updates to plant management.
- Develops and maintains PLC/HMI systems from the plant floor to management levels.
- Offers technical support and enhancement for automation systems (PLC / HMI / VFD / Instrumentation / Data and Voice Networks / plant electrical distribution systems) and implements necessary updates to prevent technical obsolescence.
- Ensures that CertainTeed Gypsum's standards for safety, quality, and reliability are integrated into power distribution and control systems.
- Assists the maintenance team with complex troubleshooting challenges.
- Utilizes advanced tools and techniques to minimize process variations and downtime.
- Identifies and resolves special cause variations in processes.
- Analyzes operational issues, formulates solutions, and leads the implementation of corrective measures.
- Collects, interprets, and extrapolates data from production processes to monitor equipment performance against established benchmarks and applies appropriate corrective actions.
- Develops and maintains standard operating procedures and work instructions.
- Keeps records of plant and individual equipment performance.
- Ensures comprehensive documentation of all projects and systems to WCM / Early Equipment Management (EEM) standards.
- Prepares and maintains data sheets, wiring diagrams, and Process & Instrumentation Diagrams (P&ID) necessary for the efficient operation of plant equipment.
Is this position suitable for you?
- Bachelor's Degree in Electrical Engineering or a related field, or equivalent experience.
- Three to five (3-5) years of practical experience in Instrumentation & Controls (I&C) / PLC.
- Proficiency in programming Allen Bradley PLCs is essential.
- Strong experience with motor control systems (VFD, DOL, soft start, and electronic overload).
- Prior experience in electrical process control, instrumentation, automation, industrial protocols/networking (switching & routing), and databases.
- Experience with DCS, preferably in a paper mill environment.
- Understanding of integrated automation and information systems in a manufacturing context.
- Familiarity with National Electrical Code (NEC) and Arc-Flash (NFPA-70E) code requirements.
- Flexible, open-minded team player with strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Excellent interpersonal and problem-solving abilities to work effectively in corporate, manufacturing, and team settings.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite.

Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience in a paper mill environment.
- Significant experience with Valmet's distributed control systems (DCS) and quality control systems (QCS).
- Familiarity with OSIsoft/Aveva Pi and Aveva Wonderware.
- Experience using AutoCAD.

Certain states require pay information to be included in job postings. Saint-Gobain aims to provide a comprehensive Total Rewards package to support our employees' well-being and enhance their daily lives. We believe in the importance of pay transparency and provide the national pay range for this position, which is $79,500 to $123,400 per year; however, the base pay offered may vary based on geographic region, internal equity, job-related knowledge, skills, and experience among other factors.
In addition to base salary, this position is eligible for an annual bonus. The targeted bonus amount is 10% of base salary based on company and individual performance measures. The Total Target Cash range (base pay and annual bonus) for this position is up to $135,000. Bonus payments are part of variable compensation and can vary based on company and individual performance and are not guaranteed.
