The Control Systems Automation Specialist will play a crucial role in the development and execution of World Class Manufacturing (WCM) initiatives, focusing on production methodologies, instrumentation, controls, and distributed control system (DCS) management in alignment with the core values and objectives of Saint-Gobain Group.

This position leverages engineering principles and advanced process control techniques to ensure processes are efficient, capable, and stable; minimize process variability; and address special cause variations effectively.

Additionally, this role will lead the implementation and maintenance of plant automation, electrical systems, and database management, overseeing capital projects as necessary.


Key Responsibilities:
Reports directly to the Engineering Manager and/or the Electrical/Instrumentation Manager.
Accountable for the planning, assessment, organization, and execution of automation-related projects and initiatives.
Will supervise the Valmet DCS and Quality Control System (QCS)/scanner.

Responsibilities encompass designing and developing new process control systems, revising and maintaining existing processes, executing WCM projects, managing contractors and suppliers, identifying new opportunities, and conducting cost/benefit analyses to enhance operational efficiencies.

Engages with plant and corporate management to secure necessary resources for the planning and execution of control projects.

Collaborates with consultants and suppliers to evaluate the compatibility of various systems and products applicable to WCM and Controls.

Works closely with Production and Engineering Managers to coordinate modifications in production processes and troubleshoot equipment issues.
Manages automation projects and provides regular status updates to plant management.
Develops and maintains PLC/HMI systems from the operational floor to management levels.

Offers technical support and enhancement for automation systems (PLC/HMI/VFD/Instrumentation/Data and Voice Networks/plant electrical distribution systems) and implements necessary updates to prevent technical obsolescence.

Ensures that Saint-Gobain's standards for safety, quality, and reliability are integrated into power distribution and control systems.
Assists the maintenance team with complex troubleshooting challenges.
Utilizes advanced tools and techniques to minimize process variability and downtime.
Identifies and addresses special cause variations in processes.
Analyzes operational challenges, formulates solutions, and leads the implementation of corrective measures.

Collects, interprets, and extrapolates data from production processes to monitor equipment performance against established benchmarks and applies appropriate corrective actions.

Develops and maintains standard operating procedures and work instructions.
Keeps records of plant and individual equipment performance.
Ensures comprehensive documentation of all projects and systems to WCM/Early Equipment Management (EEM) standards.

Prepares and maintains data sheets, wiring diagrams, and Process & Instrumentation Diagrams (P&ID) necessary for the efficient operation of plant equipment.

Provides training for operators and maintenance personnel.
Required Qualifications: Bachelor's Degree in Electrical Engineering or a related field, or equivalent experience.
Three to five (3-5) years of practical experience in Instrumentation & Controls (I&C)/PLC.
Proficiency in programming Allen Bradley PLCs is essential.
Strong experience with motor control systems (VFD, DOL, soft start, and electronic overload).
Prior experience in electrical process control, instrumentation, automation, industrial networking protocols, and databases.
Experience with DCS, preferably in a paper mill environment.
Understanding of integrated automation and information systems in a manufacturing context.
Familiarity with National Electrical Code (NEC) and Arc-Flash (NFPA-70E) code requirements.
A flexible, open-minded team player with excellent written and verbal communication skills.
Strong interpersonal and problem-solving abilities to work effectively in corporate and manufacturing settings.
Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite.

Preferred Qualifications:
Experience in a paper mill environment.
Significant experience with Valmet's distributed control systems (DCS) and quality control systems (QCS).
Familiarity with OSIsoft/Aveva Pi and Aveva Wonderware.
Experience using AutoCAD.
