Established in 1983, Billings Farm & Museum (BF&M) is a key initiative of the Foundation, maintaining a collaborative relationship with Marsh-Billings-Rockefeller National Historical Park (MBRNHP) and owning the Woodstock Inn & Resort.

About the Role

The ideal candidate for the Chief Operating Officer position is a visionary and strategic leader who will guide the future direction and success of the organization, enhancing strategy and operational capacity for a new growth phase.

This executive role involves providing high-level leadership and collaborating closely with the President/Executive Director and the Board to establish organizational policies, objectives, and priorities.

As a member of the executive leadership team, the Chief Operating Officer reports to the President/Executive Director, oversees four direct reports, and manages the functions of Education & Interpretation, Operations & Programs, Advancement, and Marketing.


Key Responsibilities

Organizational Leadership & Management
  • Envision, shape, and implement institutional and strategic planning as part of the executive leadership team.
  • Provide exceptional leadership and direction to the Education & Interpretation team, guided by a new Interpretive Master Plan.

Interpretive Master Plan:
  • Creatively assess and expand visitor engagement through diverse programs, events, and activities related to both the farm and the museum.
  • Align programmatic efforts to attract and grow both existing and new audience segments.
  • Maintain a culture of outstanding service for museum visitors.
  • Guide the external affairs team in:
    • Strategically expanding relationships with key stakeholders through membership initiatives, member events, and annual fundraising.
    • Enhancing institutional fundraising for operational and capital projects.
    • Strengthening and managing a comprehensive marketing and public relations strategy.
    • Building stronger partnerships with key organizations to broaden the audience.
  • Provide leadership to the Operations & Programs teams, including retail and product areas.
  • Operate at an executive level while maintaining professional confidentiality.

Key Qualifications:
  • Over eight years of successful management experience in museums or non-profit organizations.
  • Proven ability to manage and motivate diverse staff effectively; strong leadership capabilities with a collaborative approach.
  • Demonstrated success in achieving strategic objectives over multiple years.

  • Familiarity with current fundraising and engagement strategies.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Knowledge of best practices in outdoor history museums and a commitment to staying current in the museum field.
  • Experience in marketing/public relations and with membership and annual fund programs.
  • Master's degree in non-profit management, arts administration, museum studies, or a related field.

The starting salary for this position is competitive and commensurate with experience.
