Job Summary

The Clinical Laboratory Scientist will be responsible for all work assigned in all areas of the Clinical Laboratory, including routine procedures, method improvement and development, and evaluation. All work performed must be completed within a required time frame to ensure the shortest turnaround time as it relates to patient care. Accurate and professional documentation and reporting are essential. This position performs laboratory testing procedures, computer functions, quality control, and preventative maintenance. The successful candidate will work in a team-oriented environment, reflecting the UCSF and ZSFG mission, vision, and values. Adherence to health and safety precautions and procedures as mandated by regulatory agencies and compliance with all UC, ZSFG, and Clinical Laboratory policies are mandatory.

Key Responsibilities
  • Perform laboratory testing procedures, computer functions, quality control, and preventative maintenance.
  • Work in a team-oriented environment, reflecting the UCSF and ZSFG mission, vision, and values.
  • Adhere to health and safety precautions and procedures as mandated by regulatory agencies.
  • Comply with all UC, ZSFG, and Clinical Laboratory policies.
Requirements

The ideal candidate will possess a Bachelor of Science degree in an appropriate scientific field and successful completion of Clinical Laboratory Scientist/Medical Laboratory Scientist training, including a supervised 1-year clinical internship, from an accredited program. A California Clinical Laboratory Scientist License or a similar license of equal or higher level issued by the State Department of Health is also required. The candidate should have technical knowledge in biology, mathematics, chemistry, hematology, coagulation, urinalysis, immunology, molecular biology, virology, and skills in other clinical laboratory areas acquired through the CLS/MLS program. Proficiency with using Microsoft Word and Excel is also necessary. The candidate should be able to work independently, under pressure, recognize and resolve problems, and maintain a high level of organization. Excellent skills in interpersonal communication and customer service are essential. The ability to critically analyze information relevant to the responsibilities of the position and effectively communicate findings both verbally and in written reports is also required.

Preferred Qualifications

Two years of current clinical laboratory experience with a focus on the Core laboratory departments (Chemistry, Hematology, Coagulation, Urinalysis) is preferred. Experience with high-volume analyzers and effective verbal and written communication skills relative to clinical results are also desirable.
