Job Summary

The University of California is seeking a highly skilled Clinical Laboratory Scientist, Sr. Immunohematology Specialist to join our team. As a key member of our Transfusion Service, you will be responsible for training new and existing personnel, medical students, residents, and fellows on Immunohematology procedures. Your expertise will be essential in assigning workups and special testing, reviewing antibody identification workups, and developing and evaluating new test procedures, products, and equipment.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Train and mentor new and existing personnel on Immunohematology procedures
  • Assign workups and special testing, and review antibody identification workups
  • Develop and evaluate new test procedures, products, and equipment
  • Assist in validation of new Transfusion Service automated instruments
  • Oversee the purchase of all Transfusion Service reagents and instrument consumables
  • Assist in maintaining and ensuring the Transfusion Service automated instruments are in good working order
  • Assist the Quality Assurance Specialist on maintaining vendor validation on all Transfusion Service reagents and instrument consumables
  • Assist in competency and technical proficiency evaluations of all Transfusion Service personnel
  • Coordinate reference testing performed, review and post results, update billing
  • Oversee potential solid organ transplant patients with antibodies or special antigen negative requirements

Requirements:

  • College graduate degree with a BA or BS in a related science
  • Demonstrate superior theoretical knowledge, technical judgement and skills, and the ability to work with minimum supervision
  • Well-developed interpersonal and communication skills
  • Assume responsibilities for keeping abreast of technical developments through current literature review
  • Evaluates new programs and/or procedures and makes recommendations
  • Assume limited supervisory responsibilities as assigned by a Transfusion Service Supervisor
  • Recent experience performing clinical lab testing in Transfusion Service
  • Three to five years of Transfusion Service experience in a moderate to complex environment
  • Experience writing and/or revising Standard Operating Procedures, performing audits, data analysis
  • Solid experience working in WORD, EXCEL, PowerPoint, or other database applications
  • Experience with teaching/training, including orientation and training of employees

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Previous experience in a high-volume laboratory doing clinical laboratory testing
  • SBB certification preferred
  • Five years of Transfusion Service experience in a moderate to high complexity environment
