Job Overview:

POSITION SUMMARY
  • Under the guidance of the Maintenance Supervisor or Maintenance Working Leader, the role involves the installation and upkeep of machinery at the Filtration Plant and Water Pollution Control Plant, along with associated facilities. The employee will participate in an on-call rotation and is expected to demonstrate sound judgment, independence, initiative, and professional expertise in daily operations. All tasks must adhere to the safety protocols and operational regulations established by the City and Utility, as well as comply with federal, state, and local laws.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES include effective interaction with the public, city personnel, and external agencies with patience, respect, and professionalism, along with the following duties. Additional responsibilities may be assigned.

OPERATIONAL DUTIES
  • Fills in for or assists operators or other staff as necessary;
  • Keeps the work area, grounds, and equipment clean and organized;
  • Assists in the training of fellow employees;
  • Implements lockout/tag out procedures when servicing systems and equipment;
  • Stays updated on mechanical knowledge and relevant industry developments;
  • Utilizes Computerized Maintenance Management System (CMMS) for scheduled preventive maintenance and repair tasks, records labor time and materials, and inputs necessary data;
  • Communicates effectively in both verbal and written forms;
  • Assumes responsibilities of Maintenance Working Leader as requested by the Maintenance Supervisor;
  • Applies 6S and Total Productive Maintenance (TPM) principles;
  • Practices safety measures to prevent chemical contamination of stormwater runoff;
  • Operates plant vehicles and mobile equipment, including forklifts;
  • Enters and works in confined spaces while using various safety equipment and respirators;
  • Engages in machining, fabrication, and welding tasks as required, ensuring safety;
  • Operates heavy machinery such as vactor trucks, front-end loaders, and backhoes;
  • Completes tasks in accordance with city safety regulations and operational standards;
  • Remains available for emergency calls.
MAINTENANCE AND DIAGNOSTICS
  • Conducts inspections, repairs, and maintenance on a variety of systems at the Filtration Plant and Water Pollution Control Plant;
  • Performs preventive and predictive maintenance tasks as needed;
  • Handles various maintenance activities including carpentry, painting, glazing, and masonry;
  • Assists in plant de-sludging, filter rebuilding, and aeration tank cleaning;
  • Inspects, aligns, balances, and adjusts rotating pump assemblies and shafts;
  • Maintains and properly utilizes assigned hand tools, power tools, and safety equipment;
  • Removes equipment from service for maintenance, repair, or calibration;
  • Reports any irregularities or abnormal conditions.
PERFORMANCE EXPECTATIONS

The incumbent is responsible for managing their performance in alignment with this job description and the expectations set by management. Management will collaborate with the incumbent as necessary to ensure clear communication of performance expectations and achievement of performance goals.

  • This position does not include supervisory responsibilities.
QUALIFICATIONS

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

High School Diploma or equivalent (GED) with 3 years of hands-on mechanical experience; or an Associate's degree in a related field from a two-year college or technical school with 2 years of hands-on mechanical experience.

ADDITIONAL KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

Proficiency in Personal Computer applications for spreadsheets and word processing, such as Microsoft Excel and Word;

Ability to read and interpret blueprints and technical drawings;

Strong communication skills conducive to maintaining optimal working relationships;

Specialized mechanical and diagnostic knowledge to handle non-standardized operations.

LANGUAGE SKILLS
  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to effectively communicate before groups of customers or employees.
MATH SKILLS
  • Ability to perform basic arithmetic operations using whole numbers, fractions, and decimals. Ability to compute rates, ratios, and percentages and to interpret bar graphs.
REASONING ABILITY
  • Ability to solve practical problems and address a variety of concrete variables in situations with limited standardization. Ability to interpret various instructions provided in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form. The incumbent is responsible for a range of complex maintenance and repair tasks to ensure uninterrupted water service for the community. The incumbent is expected to perform these tasks autonomously, utilizing technical manuals and work precedents, and assist in training others in these tasks.
CERTIFICATIONS AND LICENSES
  • Commercial Driver's License - Class B with Tanker endorsement within one year of employment. The incumbent must be at least 21 years of age to hold a CDL with the City;
  • Confined Space Entry Certification;
  • CPR, First Aid, and Bloodborne Pathogens certifications.
