Job Title: Head Start Teacher Aide/Bus DriverJob Summary:

The Head Start Teacher Aide/Bus Driver is a vital member of our team, responsible for providing support to teachers in carrying out daily activities that promote the physical, emotional, nutritional, social, and intellectual development of children in a safe and healthy environment. This role also involves safely transporting children to and from the center, monitoring passengers, and maintaining the cleanliness and safety of the vehicle.

Key Responsibilities:
  1. Assist teachers in daily activities, including lesson planning and implementation, to meet the individual needs of children.
  2. Develop and implement classroom activities based on children's needs, in collaboration with teachers.
  3. Perform teaching tasks as outlined in curriculum and performance standards, as needed.
  4. Assist with all requirements of the teaching position, including home visits, screening, and assessment of children, and other required documentation and duties.
  5. Perform duties of the teacher in their absence, as needed.
  6. Ensure safe driving habits and maintain a positive atmosphere on the bus, enforcing passenger regulations and administering first aid in case of injury.
  7. Conduct daily vehicle inspections, pre-trip and post-trip inspections, and report any concerns to the Area Supervisor.
  8. Obey all state, county, and local driving regulations, and refrain from using cell phones while driving.
  9. Report all accidents to the supervisor immediately and maintain required documentation concerning mileage, maintenance costs, etc.
  10. Provide communication between staff and parents concerning children, relay messages between parents and Center Staff, and be positive with parents and children as the program's first and last contact of the day.
  11. Drive the bus for field trips and other trips, using the vehicle only for official Head Start and agency business.
  12. Participate in appropriate Head Start training, attend parent committee meetings, center staff meetings, in-service training, and other training as required or requested by management staff and/or supervisor.
  13. Ensure that emergency supplies are maintained and properly stored in accordance with agency policy and procedures, and that the communication system is tested regularly and kept in working order.
  14. Work cooperatively with all Head Start staff, plan the most efficient route, and make all designated stops unless otherwise advised by Center Staff.
  15. Understand the responsibility of being a mandated reporter for Child Abuse and Neglect, read and understand the Child Abuse and Neglect Policy, and follow reporting procedures, including incidents involving other staff members.
  16. Perform additional duties as assigned by supervisors.
Requirements:
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Possess or obtain a Child Development Associate (CDA) credential within six months of hire date.
  • Knowledge of program curriculum, developmentally appropriate practice, and related program performance standards.
  • Relate to children and parents in a positive, constructive manner.
  • Develop and implement classroom activities based on children's individual needs.
  • Work well with other center staff, parents, and managers.
  • Ability to operate assigned vehicle and possess a current CDL license with all required endorsements.
  • Knowledge of all applicable bus safety regulations and procedures, and all Head Start transportation guidelines and standards.
  • Knowledge of basic vehicle maintenance.
  • Knowledge of basic child development and child care and guidance knowledge.
  • Maintain conduct that promotes a positive image to staff, parents, agency, and community.
  • Obtain initial medical exam and TB assessment within 30 days of employment, and complete a medical exam and TB assessment every five years following initial employment.
  • Pass background screen, child abuse/neglect screen, drug screen, and be subject to random drug testing.
Working Conditions:

The Head Start Teacher Aide/Bus Driver is exposed to risks such as exposure to blood, body fluids, or tissues, risk involved with travel on main highways, side streets, and rural roads during the transportation of children, and risk of exposure to communicable diseases. The job requires standing for long periods, lifting 55 pounds, climbing into the school bus, bending, kneeling, and squatting frequently.
