Job Summary

UNC Health Southeastern seeks a highly skilled Physician Advisor to provide leadership and expertise in care coordination, length of stay management, and clinical documentation improvement. This role will play a critical part in enhancing patient flow, throughput, and quality of care.

Key Responsibilities
  • Care Coordination and Leadership: Collaborate with care coordination, nursing, patient access, and ancillary services departments to meet established goals and lead physician participation and compliance.
  • Policy Development: Review and provide physician perspective on policies related to care coordination, care progression, patient access, and clinical documentation improvement.
  • Decision-Making Authority: Work with cross-functional teams to make informed decisions that drive quality and efficiency in patient care.
  • Supervisory Responsibility: Engage physicians in care coordination, care progression, patient access, and clinical documentation improvement activities.
Requirements
  • Education: Graduate of an accredited medical school and completion of specialty residency (e.g., Internal Medicine, Emergency Medicine).
  • Experience: Five years of recent experience in clinical practice in a hospital, with two years of administrative background as a physician manager preferred.
  • Licensure and Certification: Board Certified/Eligible Physician licensed in applicable states and certification by American Board of Quality Assurance.
  • Skills and Abilities: Strong clinical acumen, knowledge of case management principles, and working knowledge of third-party payor guidelines/medical necessity criteria.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience in Academic Medicine: Familiarity with clinical documentation requirements and working knowledge of Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services rules and regulations.
  • Leadership and Communication Skills: Excellent communication and presentation skills, with teaching and coaching abilities.
  • Process Improvement: Working knowledge of process improvement methodology and experience with denials management.
