Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Wildland Fire Management Specialist to join our team at the U.S. Department of the Interior. As a key member of our fire management team, you will be responsible for providing technical expertise and guidance to park units on fire policy implementation, managing a complex regional fire program, and supervising subordinate staff.

Key Responsibilities
  • Provide technical expertise and guidance to park units on fire policy implementation.
  • Manage a complex regional fire program, including providing expertise on fire management, fuels management, and interagency coordination.
  • Supervise, direct, and coordinate subordinate staff.
  • Collaborate with park and regional leadership on fire management issues.
  • Develop agreements to support fire management activities across multiple units.
  • Provide advice on fire management planning, including evaluation of objectives in resource management plans.
  • Develop evaluation measures to determine if fire management activities have accomplished objectives.
  • Provide leadership for and participate in fire management review processes.
Requirements
  • U.S. Citizenship required.
  • Appointment subject to background investigation and favorable adjudication.
  • Meet Selective Service Registration Act requirement for males.
  • Must be able to operate a government motor vehicle and submit to a drug test.
  • Must be able to work on-call, evenings, weekends, holidays, overtime, and shift work during fire season.
  • Must be able to complete training and obtain/maintain a government charge card with purchase authority.
Qualifications

To qualify for this position, you must possess at least one year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-12 level in the Federal service. Specialized experience includes wildland fire management experience, such as providing leadership and supervision for fire management staff, assigning crews and wildland firefighters, and supervising administrative program functions.

Volunteer experience is also considered. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

There is no educational qualification for the GS-0456 Wildland Firefighter occupational series at the GS-12 grade level.
