Patient Access Coordinator

As a key member of the University Hospitals Revenue Cycle team, the Patient Access Specialist I plays a vital role in ensuring accurate and timely patient registration, estimation, and collection of payments. This position requires excellent communication and interpersonal skills, as well as the ability to work in a fast-paced environment.
Responsibilities- Interview patients to gather demographic and insurance information, and utilize complex applications to create or validate patient medical records and insurance claims.
- Verify and allocate insurance plans using electronic eligibility tools, phone calls to payers, and web portals.
- Execute patient estimates, educate guarantors on charges and out-of-pocket liability, and establish payment plans as needed.
- Collect and post co-pays, deductibles, co-insurance, and prior balances due from patients in accordance with policy.
- Take steps to prevent medical record duplications or incorrect patient selection, and safeguard Protected Health Information (PHI).
- Communicate with physicians or other clinical providers to validate or clarify information on orders, schedules, or other requirements.
- Utilize electronic reports, worklists, and queues to identify claims requiring updating, and make corrections as needed.
- Participate in emergency preparedness drills and disaster exercises, and maintain knowledge of safety protocols.
- Provide directions or transport as needed to ensure a positive patient experience.
- High School Equivalent or GED required.
- 1+ year of healthcare or customer service experience required; 2+ years preferred.
- College associate or bachelor's degree is equivalent to 1 year of work experience.
- Experience utilizing multiple complex software solutions.
- Dependable and willing to work in a 24/7/365 department with occasional travel to other sites and locations.
- Notable client service, communication, and relationship building skills.
