Executive Legal Advisor for Correctional Operations

The City of New York seeks a seasoned legal professional to serve as Executive Legal Advisor for Correctional Operations. This critical role is responsible for providing expert legal counsel and guidance to the Department of Correction's (DOC) executive staff, ensuring compliance with federal, state, and local laws, as well as departmental policies.



As Executive Legal Advisor, you will be a key member of the DOC's leadership team, responsible for formulating and implementing policies related to correctional operations. Your expertise will be essential in advising on complex legal issues, negotiating contracts, and representing the DOC in various legal proceedings.



Key Responsibilities:


  • Provide expert legal counsel to the DOC's executive staff on matters related to correctional operations, including policy development, contract negotiations, and litigation.
  • Develop and implement policies and procedures to ensure compliance with federal, state, and local laws, as well as departmental policies.
  • Represent the DOC in various legal proceedings, including court hearings and administrative proceedings.
  • Supervise and manage a team of attorneys and administrative support personnel within the DOC's Legal Division.
  • Coordinate with other city agencies, including the Department of Investigations, New York Police Department, and District Attorney's offices, to ensure seamless communication and collaboration.


Successful candidates will possess a minimum of four years of recent, relevant full-time legal experience, with at least 18 months of supervisory experience in a managerial or executive capacity. A strong understanding of corrections work and law enforcement principles is highly desirable. The ideal candidate will be a strategic thinker, able to communicate complex ideas clearly and effectively, both orally and in writing.



Required Skills and Qualifications:


  • Admission to the New York State Bar.
  • Four years of recent, relevant full-time legal experience, with at least 18 months of supervisory experience in a managerial or executive capacity.
  • Strong understanding of corrections work and law enforcement principles.
  • Excellent communication, analytical, and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to manage a team of attorneys and administrative support personnel.


The estimated salary for this position is $175,000 - $225,000 per year, based on the City of New York's salary scales and the candidate's qualifications and experience.

Residency in New York City is generally required within 90 days of appointment. However, City Employees in certain titles who have worked for the City for 2 continuous years may also be eligible to reside in Nassau, Suffolk, Putnam, Westchester, Rockland, or Orange County.
