The Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist (CRNA) will perform a variety of duties to ensure that quality nursing care is provided in an atmosphere that maintains the privacy, dignity, and well-being of patients.

The CRNA administers sedatives and/or anesthetics to patients and works under the direction of the operating physician and collaborates with the operating room staff. They are responsible for knowing a patient's history and condition, and anticipating how he or she might respond to anesthetics and developing and implementing a plan in response to a patient's condition.

Detailed Responsibilities

  • Review medical history, evaluate patients, and determine proper methods of anesthesia
  • Accurately measure and monitor the level and speed at which anesthesia is administered
  • Monitor patient's vital signs to ensure safety
  • Inform the surgeon if a patient becomes unstable
  • Attend to patient's needs before, during, and after surgery
  • Oversee patient recovery from anesthesia
  • Ensure that physician orders are followed for all patients
  • Apply knowledge, skill, and judgment in providing all patient care
  • Promote and participate in providing accurate recording of medications and treatments given to patients
  • Promote the improvement of nursing care within the Center
  • Conform to and promote acceptance of established objectives, policies, and procedures
  • Assist in maintaining stock of supplies and equipment for the Center and promote proper utilization of all
  • Maintain Center drugs and reorders as needed; monitor for outdated stock and follows proper disposal procedures; maintain emergency cart, equipment, and drugs
  • Follow the chain of command communicating reportable situations to the appropriate personnel in a timely manner
  • Maintain confidentiality of management information; display discretion and good judgment in communication methods
  • Adhere to all approved Center policies and procedures; notifies supervisor of any deviation from approved policy
  • Assists in the orientation of new employees to the Center
  • Displays ability to accept counseling from direct supervisor in a positive manner
  • Displays ability to and desire to initiate corrective action
  • Become familiar with the Center's Fire, Safety, and Disaster Plan, and his/her role in the event of each
  • Displays cost-effectiveness in materials management; assume responsibility for timely verification of supplies used in the Center
  • Maintain satisfactory attendance; notify supervisor if unable to report to work
  • Punctual in arriving for duty on assigned days
Requirements

Education and Experience/Technical Skills
  • Graduate of an accredited school of anesthesia nursing
  • Current APRN registration with the Texas Board of Nurse Examiners
  • Evidence of current NBCRNA certification
  • Evidence of current BLS certification
  • Evidence of current ACLS certification
Other Position Requirements
  • Adequate clinical knowledge and skills to plan, evaluate, and perform the quality of nursing care that meets the standards of nursing established by the Center
  • Cognizant of established safety regulations
  • Knowledgeable of techniques to prevent the spread of disease and an awareness that the job may require contact with communicable diseases
  • Knowledge of emergency equipment/drugs with the ability to react promptly and professionally in any situation
