The Whiting School of Engineering (WSE) at Johns Hopkins University is seeking a visionary and innovative faculty member, with excellent interpersonal and facilitation skills to serve as the Director/Associate Director for Undergraduate Faculty Mentoring. This is a career-oriented, renewable appointment with both administrative and teaching responsibilities. Johns Hopkins University has a well-established non-tenure track career path for full-time teaching faculty culminating in the rank of Teaching Professor. The successful candidate will be appointed at the Director or Associate Director and Lecturer, Senior Lecturer, or Associate Teaching Professor rank depending upon their level of prior experience. The successful candidate will assume this role at an exciting time as the WSE Office of Undergraduate Academic Affairs is reimagining undergraduate academic advising, faculty mentoring, and professional academic advisor career development. The Director/Associate Director for Undergraduate Faculty Mentoring will report to the Vice Dean for Undergraduate Education and work closely with the Assistant Dean for Undergraduate Academic Advising to develop and implement all strategies and programming to mobilize and engage a pool of high-quality, well-prepared, diverse faculty mentors. Demonstrated experience with faculty engagement, program design and program assessment are highly desired. This faculty member will be appointed in the academic departments or centers most closely aligned with their academic background and will teach in these academic programs. Teaching faculty members are also encouraged to engage in departmental and university service and may have advising responsibilities. Applicants for the position must have a Ph.D. in an engineering discipline, computer science, or a closely related field, demonstrated excellence in and commitment to teaching and mentoring, and excellent communication skills. The Office of Undergraduate Academic Affairs, located on the beautiful Homewood campus in north Baltimore, Maryland, supports the WSE mission to prepare undergraduates to be 21st century leaders by providing an outstanding engineering education and enabling undergraduates to participate fully in the research and translational activities of the school. Develop Mentoring & Advising Awards coordinate dinner/presentation Mentor a cohort of WSE Undergraduate students Other duties as assigned Special knowledge, skills, and abilities: Enthusiasm for working with high achieving, socially and culturally diverse student populations Demonstrated experience in assessment Excellent organization and time management skills Effective project management skills Ability to work independently as well as the ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships Knowledge of co-curricular academic experiences necessary for a comprehensive undergraduate experience Ability to interact productively with faculty, administrators, students, and other academic and administrative departments Understanding of student development theory and current academic advising practices Superior interpersonal skills with the ability to relate to all levels of the organization and work in a team environment. Ability to communicate effectively with diverse populations verbally and in writing Ph.D. in an engineering discipline, computer science, or a closely related field required 5 or more years of experience in higher education, preferably with both academic advising and teaching experience Strong multicultural competency Demonstrated experience in program development, staff development, and program assessment Applications should include a cover letter and CV.
