N Position Type Management Director of Web Performance Introduction Our director of web performance engineering should be technically skilled, data-driven, and possess strong leadership and communication abilities. By combining these skills, they can guide the overall web engineering team towards goals that will enhance user experience through improved web speed and performance. You will report to the web platform engineering team, which sits at the center of the web engineering program. You will work with all web engineering teams to identify improvement areas in their respective product areas. You will also monitor dependent teams that provide API services to help identify opportunities for them to include in their roadmaps. You will help us identify ways to systematize performance so that we can keep the site fast over time. This dynamic leader will work with Senior Leadership weekly on the progress of our performance initiatives enterprise wide. You will be working with various front-end and back-end teams to influence objectives that will enable our applications to perform at a higher level. You will be the finger on the pulse of how the web applications are performing and why. You will have influence over tooling that the teams will use to ensure performance moves towards the KPIs we set. Drive performance accountability within the organization with well-defined processes, metrics, and goals for process quality. This includes leading effective postmortems and ensuring actions are followed-up. Performance Budgeting: Establish and monitor performance budgets to ensure that website performance stays within acceptable thresholds. Set Actionable Targets: Instead of aiming for absolute perfection, set realistic and actionable targets for improvement. Small, incremental improvements can have a significant cumulative effect on overall performance. Performance Monitoring: Monitor and analyze the performance metrics of the website or application, including page load times, response times, server response codes, and other relevant performance indicators. We are especially concerned with Core Web Vitals and other custom client-side timing metrics for our SPA based features. Data Analysis: Collect, process, and analyze data related to website performance using various tools and techniques, such as Adobe Analytics, performance monitoring tools such as Blue Triangle and Dynatrace, and custom scripts. Monitor User Feedback: Pay attention to user feedback related to website performance. User complaints or negative feedback about slow loading times can indicate areas that require immediate attention. Identify Bottlenecks: Identify performance bottlenecks and areas for improvement that affect the website's speed, user experience, and overall performance. Root Cause Analysis: Conduct root cause analysis of performance issues to understand the underlying reasons for slowdowns or degradation in performance. Performance Reporting: Prepare and present regular performance reports to stakeholders, management, and development teams to keep them informed about the site's performance trends and improvements. Business Impact Analysis: Assess the business impact of performance issues on key performance indicators (KPIs), such as conversion rates, bounce rates, and revenue. Collaboration with Development Teams: Work closely with software developers, product managers, and other stakeholders to understand performance requirements and collaborate on implementing performance improvements. Performance Testing: Plan and execute performance testing, load testing, and stress testing to evaluate the website's performance under various conditions and user loads. Performance Optimization: Propose and prioritize performance optimization strategies, such as caching mechanisms, code optimizations, content delivery network (CDN) implementation, and database tuning. User Experience (UX) Analysis: Consider the impact of performance on user experience and work towards improving the website's speed and responsiveness. Stay Updated on Industry Trends: Keep up-to-date with industry best practices, emerging technologies, and trends related to website performance and user experience. A/B Testing: Collaborate with marketing teams to perform A/B testing on website elements to measure the impact of changes on performance and user behavior. Accessibility Analysis: Consider website accessibility aspects and ensure that performance optimizations do not negatively impact users with disabilities. Required Skills: 8+ years in the software engineering disciplines 6+ years building highly performant web applications, including a deep understanding of the web browser and how a browser performs under load. Understanding of how various resources like CSS, JS, HTML, Images impact the performance of the web browser. 2+ years’ experience with technologies such as react.js and next.js and how they pertain to web performance. Strong technical leadership skills, including the ability to present objective and data driven insights to influence our priorities and techniques A conceptual and/or functional understanding of caching strategies, local, intra-datacenter, and edge. Preferred experience: Strong Communications skills, both oral and written Experience normalization of disparate data sources into a data lake for centralized reporting Experience with performance tools like Lighthouse CI, Blue Triangle, Dynatrace, Splunk.
