Manager, Communications & Student Media Description The Manager, Communications & Student Media oversees and coordinates marketing, communications, and student media initiatives within the Division of Student Affairs (DSA). The role involves supporting students and staff in the division, managing projects, and collaborating with various stakeholders to enhance the visibility and engagement of the division and its programs/services. This position supports and sustains student media as an independent, student-driven learning environment for students interested in print/digital media as well as serves as lead content expert and creator for all DSA marketing and communication requests and work. Duties: Manages DSA marketing and communication efforts, student media, and strategies that have campus-wide reach, including website, social media, student media related platforms, student engagement platforms, and all other digital and print marketing materials both for the unit and to directly support the DSA team and student media staff. Oversees student media, creates and schedules communications from the VPSA/SLT, manages email requests and distribution calendar from DSA email account. Under the supervision of the VPSA and in consultation with leadership, coordinates the division’s response and messaging for crisis communications. Manages DSA email account, including monitoring inbox, replying to messages. Manages DSA Outlook calendar for internal communications as well as creates and manages DSA print communications strategy. Provides supervision and direction for DSA departments on use of the UHCL brand, creates and monitors DSA marketing policies and procedures, oversees approval process for marketing materials from the DSA and its departments, including flyer's, signage, promotional items and mass emails. Develops project plans in collaboration with DSA non-auxiliary departments and University Marketing and Communications (MarComm) to amplify and support department initiatives. Develops and implements the DSA social media presence, creates, implements, and measures the success of the DSA social media strategy, advises DSA departments on use of social media in compliance with institutional and system policies, facilitates and protects student expression and participation in student media, promotes a commitment to student advocacy in journalism, educates students on the importance in representing themselves, their journalistic responsibilities, and their interests. Creates and maintains learning outcomes/program objectives that align with the overall mission and goals of the unit. Creates and administers assessment tools for trainings and programs. Organizes and directs specific training activities in media law, ethics, journalism practices, advertising, design, marketing, social media, video, audio and other relevant media formats and communication models used to publish the student newspaper and other digital media. Manages and edits the DSA web page, supports MarComm to train appropriate staff across the DSA to edit their respective web pages, advises DSA departments on web content. Creates graphics for DSA and Student Media, including print materials and promotional items; occasionally assists DSA non-auxiliary departments with graphic design work when necessary; creates DSA annual report, print and/or digital, with copy provided by the VPSA. Recruits, selects, trains, supervises, and assesses student staff and interns on their employment roles and responsibilities. Fosters collaborative relationships with staff, administration, vendors, and community. Serves as liaison to Univ. MarComm for the DSA. Chairs DSA Marketing and Communications Committee. Serves in an advisory capacity to the student media team(s) and other related advisory boards or committees. Manages Student Media and DSA marketing and communications budget in order to maximize Return on Investment (ROI), works in collaboration with University Marketing and Communications and Accessibility Support Center to meet legal, system, and institutional accessibility standards related to communications. Responsible for controlling expenditures in accordance with budget allocations for the program area and performs related duties as assigned. Qualifications Required: Bachelor's degree in Communications, Journalism, or a related field. Minimum two years of job-related experience educating others about marketing, communications, journalism, critical writing, and/or print/digital publishing. Experience supervising. Knowledge of current marketing and communication strategies to successfully engage the campus and student population. Student development, technical writing, and issues necessary for advising and programming. Knowledge of student success theory/application and the life experiences of a variety of student populations. Knowledge of digital/print media with strong attention to detail - especially in program development and documentation. Skills in Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint. Skills in Graphic Design software (Example: Adobe Cloud Suite). Good understanding of digital and print publishing processes from concept to completion; solid understanding of color theory, design principles, typography, and branding. Excellent verbal and written communication skills including those for whom English is a second language. Excellent time management and organizational skills. Must have strong interpersonal skills as well as excellent public relation skills and ability to collaborate with various constituencies. Ability to build relationships across campus with faculty, staff and students. Ability to understand complex issues surrounding media, communication and marketing related issues - necessary to do advising, programming and consulting. Ability to advise groups and multi-task while working cooperatively as part of a team. Strong budgetary skills. Ability to create and update a variety of marketing, communications, reports and files. Must have the ability to manage multiple tasks and projects simultaneously, ability to take initiative for projects and development of services within office, and coordinate initiatives among multiple distinct departments/services. Desired: Master's degree in Communications, Journalism, or related field. Specific coursework in marketing, communications, media law, digital media, and publications. Progressive experience in training staff and students as well as developing programs and activities for student media and communications in a university setting.
