The associate manager is a hands-on manager in training role, which acts as a transitionary role to allow partners to develop and prepare for store leadership. This role will work closely with other managers and leaders to develop an understanding of how Starbucks Reserve retail business operates and learn what it means to lead and manage with excellence in a store environment. The associate manager will be introduced to multiple areas of the store's business, with most of their time learning how to lead a specific zone and partners of the store. This role will work to drive customer experience, how to impact a store's financials, develop a high performing teams, and operate to excellence.

This associate manager will support our Reserve Kitchen zone within the Chicago Roastery. This zone is responsible for bringing our innovative culinary playbook to life . The Reserve Kitchen zone is comprised of our baker team, those who handcraft our food products, and our barista team, responsible for providing legendary customer service while showcasing our offerings .

Summary of Key Responsibilities

  • Responsibilities and essential job functions include but are not limited to the following:

    Leadership - Setting goals for the work group, developing organizational capability, and modeling how we work together :

    • Leads a team of hourly partners to deliver legendary customer and partner experiences.
    • Role models a passion for service, coffee curiosity, operation al excellence and innovation while inspiring partners to deliver the Starbucks Reserve Experience .
    • Drives the engagement, development and performance of all members of their team.
    • Drives the implementation of company programs by developing action plans and directly motivating and instructing the store team on how to implement those plans to meet operational and organizational objectives .
    • Constantly reviews store environment and key business indicators to identify problems, concerns, and opportunities for improvement to provide coaching and direction to the store team to achieve operational and business goals.
    Planning and Execution - Developing strategic and operational plans for the work group, managing execution, and measuring results:
    • Works with the operations manager(s) , sr operations manager and store director to help inform and develop strategic and operational plans for the store team, managing execution and measuring results.
    • Execute store staffing strategy by recruiting the best talent and creating a great partner experience based on Starbucks tools and resources.
    • Supports operations manager(s), sr operations manager and store director in implementing company programs by working directly with shift team to execute action plans that meet operational and company objectives .
    • Communicates regularly with store leadership team (including peers, operations manager (s) , sr operations manager(s), specialist ( s ) and store director(s)) about operational and partner observations, challenges, concerns, insights and suggestions.


    Business Requirements - Providing functional expertise and executing functional responsibilities:
    • Develops understanding and usage of all operational tools, systems and processes to plan for and achieve operational excellence in the store.
    • Uses discretion in accessing external resources to support store operations. Resources include but are not limited to Partner Resources, Marketing, Partner & Asset Protection, Food & Beverage, Coffee, and Operations Services .
    • Utilizes management information tools and analyzes financial reports to identify and address trends and issues in store performance.
    • Manages service of alcohol according to all state and federal laws and regulations, as well as company and brand and policies and standards .


    Pa rt ner Development & Team Building - Providing partners with coaching, feedback, and developmental opportunities, using collaboration and peer coaching to build effective teams:
    • Role models leading in service of others.
    • Actively manages store partners by regularly conducting performance assessments and providing performance feedback using performance and development tools to support organizational objectives .
    • Challenges and inspires partners to achieve business results.
    • Develops and maintains positive working relationships with partners.
    • Recognizes and reinforces individual and team accomplishments by using existing organizational tools and programs and finding new, creative, and effective methods of recognition.
    • Utilizes and demonstrates effective management principles and practices to create and maintain a successful store team resulting in an environment where partners are valued and respected.


Basic Qualifications
    • 2.5 years of progressively responsible experience in retail or restaurant environment
    • Experience supervising others
    • 21+ years of age
    • Education: High school/GED
    • Available to work flexible hours, which could include early mornings, evenings, weekends, and holidays
    • Ability to carry 35lb on a consistent basis
    • Ability to read, understand, follow, and enforce safety procedures
    Preferred Qualifications
    • Education: College degree or a closely related field may substitute for a portion of the required experience
    • Experience with lifestyle based experiential brands, hospitality, service oriented, big-box and/or specialty retail, restaurants and/or bakery preferred
    • Experience with building and cultivating relationships with customers, partners, local market leaders (internal and external) and the community
    • Strong supervisory, teambuilding, and leadership skills, with the ability to coach and mentor others
    • Additional languages beneficial

    *If you are working in CA, CO, IL, LA, ME, MA, NE, ND or RI, you will accrue vacation up to a maximum of 120 hours (190 in CA) for roles below director and 200 hours (316 in CA) for roles at director or above. For roles in other states, you will be granted vacation time starting at 120 hours annually for roles below director and 200 hours annually for roles director and above.

    The actual base pay offered to the successful candidate will be based on multiple factors, including but not limited to job-related knowledge/skills, experience, geographical location, and internal equity.
