Bering Strait School District has an opening for an Itinerant School Counselor in our district. We are beginning to do interviews by Skype, video conference and other means. Our School Counseling Department is growing and working towards being a fully comprehensive program modeled after the American School Counselor Association Model.

Being comfortable using technology to track student progress and to prepare documentation is a significant advantage. BSSD utilizes a comprehensive web database for tracking student progress called PowerSchool, Google Drive and Macbooks; technology is used for most day-to-day tasks. JOB DESCRIPTION

TITLE: School Counselor

QUALIFICATIONS:
1. Current Alaska Type C special services certificate in an approved counseling program
2. Master's degree in School Counseling preferred
3. Experience counseling children from a variety of backgrounds
4. Clinical skills that directly relate to the knowledge of contemporary development issues
5. Excellent communication skills and be able to work with individuals and groups
6. Experience with Trauma Engaged Schools practices preferred

JOB DESCRIPTION:

The Project Aware Grant funded position will become a certified trainer of mental health first aid and SafeTalk and provide direct instruction to students and stakeholders. Topics will include trauma effects, resiliency, substance abuse, homelessness, healthy choices, healthy relationships, communication skills and conflict resolution, life skills, and more. This position will provide counseling services for individuals, families, and groups experiencing these issues. This position will coordinate and develop partnerships with agencies outside the school system, and continually streamline the referral system for accessing supports surrounding mental health issues. The hire will keep records to meet expectations of the grant, the school district, and partner agencies. The hire will attend meetings and when applicable deliver reports.

The counselor will provide professional development presentations and support to faculty and staff as part of a district wide team.

*This position will require a flexible schedule outside of the typical workday and under a modified calendar to coordinate and participate with partner agencies and provide trainings, counseling sessions, and possibly home visits.

Position reports directly to the Project AWARE Grant LEA through coordination with the building principal. Possible examples of ways to support healthy mental health:

Screen students for mental health concerns and provide counseling or referral to mental health agencies as appropriate.

Develop a program and assist youth in connecting with healthy role models/mentors in the community.

Assist youth in finding resources to mitigate ACES or other factors in the lives.

Integrate into the community and gain the trust of students and families.

REPORTS TO: Principal and District Coordinator of Counseling
SALARY: Placement on Salary Schedule per negotiated agreement
LENGTH OF EMPLOYMENT: 210 days
LOCATION: Gambell & Savoonga
