Classroom Support/ Paraprofessional Educator for Special Education Programs
Minimum Requirements:
A high school diploma or equivalent is required.
Must fulfill the paraprofessional criteria for the state of Alaska through one of the following methods: 48 college semester credits from an accredited institution, OR a passing score on the ETS Paraprofessional Assessment exam, OR successful completion of the WorkKeys by ACT assessment, OR completion of the Anchorage School District's Master Teacher paraprofessional training.
Essential literacy skills in reading, writing, and mathematics are necessary.Strong communication and customer service abilities are essential.
Capability to maintain confidentiality while fostering trust and collaboration among staff, parents, students, administrators, and the community.
Ability to cultivate and sustain a professional rapport with staff, parents, students, administrators, and the community.
Preferred Qualifications:
Familiarity with first aid practices.
One year of experience in general education, special education, agency settings, or private educational institutions.
Experience working directly with individuals with disabilities.
Basic proficiency with office equipment and computer skills, including word processing, printing, and email.
Ability to read and interpret documents such as Individual Education Plans (IEPs), behavior plans, and lesson plans under the guidance of a special education teacher.
Capacity to remain composed and maintain professionalism during conflicts and make sound decisions under pressure.
Ability to share critical information appropriately with team members to support the development of individualized student programs.
Willingness to receive training in specific instructional strategies, programs, techniques, and technologies and to implement such training accurately and consistently.
Ability to take direction and independently follow through on assigned tasks.
For Life Skills and Structured Learning classrooms: experience working with students with significant disabilities and implementing various treatment or clinical therapy plans.
Lifting up to 50 pounds may be necessary at times.Must be able to effectively implement details of individual students' behavioral support plans.
Ability to read and interpret information from various professionals, including psychologists, behavioral specialists, counselors, and mental health specialists, and under their guidance and that of the special education teacher, appropriately utilize the information to support students.
Essential Job Functions:
Provides special education services and support for students individually or in small groups under the supervision of a special education teacher.
Collects data in accordance with student(s) IEP goals and objectives as directed by certified special education staff.
Collaborates and works cooperatively with colleagues and staff.
Follows written and oral instructions and independently executes teacher-directed programming/strategies.
Provides special education services and support for students as outlined in the IEP.
Duties include delivering instructional services, planning and implementing accommodations and modifications, developing and executing behavioral and social interventions, and assisting students to and from transportation.
Attends to and provides for students' daily hygiene, personal, and health-related care, including dressing, feeding, and toileting as directed by certified special education staff.Offers detailed, explicit information on student functioning and progress to assist teachers or related service personnel in developing appropriate learning and behavioral supports.
Assists in positioning/range of motion tasks for students, such as lifting, repositioning, and transferring between equipment.Supports classroom management by organizing instructional materials, supervising students during field trips and lunch/recess, and assisting in learning activities outside of the special education classroom.
Upholds the Anchorage School District's commitment to valuing diversity, promoting respect, and maintaining confidentiality.Provides primary support in special education or regular education classroom environments and additional support in other school settings based on individual student needs. This may include assistance/monitoring during lunch periods, breaks, and recesses as specified in the IEP.
For Life Skills and Structured Learning classrooms: Provides primary support in special education or general education classroom environments, with additional student support in other school settings such as restrooms, corridors, lunchrooms, gyms, conference rooms, or playgrounds.
This also includes assistance/monitoring during lunch periods, breaks, and recesses, and assisting students to and from transportation as specified in the IEP.
Implements approved de-escalation techniques, protocols, and training for physical restraint as required by district behavioral programs.Physical /Mental Demands:
The physical demands of this role require frequent standing, walking, sitting, speaking, and hearing. Specific visual abilities are also required.
The employee is regularly required to reach with hands and arms and occasionally lift items weighing less than 40 lbs.
Additionally, the employee must be able to comprehend vague and implicit instructions, recall facts and details, manage conflict, and make effective decisions under pressure.
The employee must effectively handle the stress of working with students, parents, and other employees representing diverse cultures, personalities, and work styles in a dynamic work environment.
Work Environment:
Work is conducted in a professional environment with a diverse range of individuals possessing differing functions, personalities, and abilities, including working with various groups of people in different settings.
