Sr. Electronics Technician

Grand Rapids, United States BISSELL Full time
Overview

The Sr. Electronics Technician is accountable to the technician Team Leader or Supervisor and is responsible for building fully functional prototype electronics and electrical sub-assemblies, and helping other teams assemble them into prototype product assemblies for testing. Their primary focus is to support new product development with early prototypes for in-home field tests, and electronic/electrical platform development with early prototypes for laboratory testing. The Sr. Electronics Technician will support the procurement and assembly of electrical and electronic components and subsystems for these functional prototypes, load software as needed, and verify full functionality of every prototype before delivering them to the test Lab or field test recipient. The Sr. Electronics Technician must have a demonstrated understanding of standard wiring and electronic control system construction, and hands-on skills in soldering and assembly of electrical/electronic components. The Sr. Electronics Technician will work closely with cross-functional teams from design and test engineering to get direction for each project on the design to be prototyped, how it will be tested, and any tradeoffs required to fabricate the prototype on schedule/budget. The Sr. Electronics Technician then must work, with minimal supervision, on the fabrication of the prototypes and their functional verifications.

Responsibilities

This position is directly or indirectly responsible for the following activities pertaining to the development and fabrication of electronic modules and electro-mechanical product prototypes for product development testing:
  • Consults with design engineer for details on the design to be prototyped and how it functions.
  • Consults with model makers in the Model Shop on the mechanical design and fabrication of the functional prototype and concerns with the interfaces between mechanical and electrical components
  • Consults with laboratory test engineer(s) on how the functional prototype products will be tested, what test wires or sensors are needed on the prototypes for test purposes, and any other special considerations that are needed in the prototype for test purposes.
  • Develops detailed plan for what parts will be provided by engineering, what parts must be ordered or fabricated, and creates any drawings or specifications required to procure or fabricate those parts
  • Leverages in-house equipment (reflow oven, soldering stations, work benches) and external resources (prototype board houses, component suppliers) to quote and procure/fabricate any electrical components needed, but not provided by Engineering, for the functional prototypes.
  • Assembles electrical/electronic components and subassemblies (including the flashing/loading of any required software provided by engineering), and then works with the mechanical model makers to properly install them into the mechanical chassis and complete the functional prototype product assembly.
  • Stays objective in areas of conflicting departmental priority; able to maintain course given by direct line manager.
  • Demonstrates practical knowledge in electronic, electrical, and mechanical systems and uses it to collaborate on the design and fabrication of the functional prototypes.
  • Assists/drives the development, implementation, organization, and retention of any documentation needed to adequately document each prototype build, what the prototypes contained as far as design and vintage of parts/software, and what functional tests were performed before handoff.
  • Effectively uses experience and technical knowledge for delivering creative solutions to internal processes and projects.
  • Attend design reviews &/or team meetings as needed to ask or answer prototype related questions.
  • Assists in other Test Technician activities as needed - including testing of prototypes and fabrication/refinement of test fixtures and equipment. Testing will most often consist of functionally testing the fabricated prototypes and conducting tests / collecting data on multiple iterations of Platform designs & prototypes during their development. It may also consist of assisting other Test Technicians with product or platform approval testing as needed.
  • Participate in internal systematic problem-solving activities and give data rational input in external systematic problem-solving sessions.
  • Provides input on the feasibility of applying data acquisition and/or automation into manual test lab processes from a functional prototype limitations perspective. Assists in the development and implementation of relevant automation as needed.
  • Proactively recommends and drives changes to the Laboratory and Model Shop technical capabilities in response to the organization's shifting needs.
  • Actively engages in learning/developmental activities, enhancing personal knowledge, skill, and potential career growth.
  • May be required to perform other duties as assigned.
