PRIMARY PURPOSE:

To plan, implement and evaluate a comprehensive program of guidance, including counseling services to assigned school; provide career interest and aptitude assessment activities, determine career and technology education needs, assist students and parents with career and educational planning strategies; provide a proactive developmental guidance program for all students to maximize personal growth and development; to promote a positive working relationship, among and between staff, by establishing a climate conducive to open communications and productive work that aligns to the Career Technical Education Program and contributes to the District's overall student academic achievement towards post-secondary and career preparedness.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Education/Certification:

Master's Degree, required

Texas Counselor's Certificate, required

Texas Teaching Certificate, required

Special Knowledge/Skills:

Knowledge of counseling procedures; communicates effectively (verbal and written); utilize effective interpersonal skills; possess effective organizational and presentation skills; interpret data, federal and state laws and policies

Experience:

Three (3) years of experience as a classroom teacher and three years of other acceptable work experience, required

Note: Starting pay for a new hire in a pay range plan will be determined individually based on each person's job-related experience and salaries paid to peer employees in the same position with similar experience.

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES/ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

1. Plan and implement the school's developmental guidance and counseling program to meet identified needs.

2. Provide guidance and counseling to individuals and groups of students related to their personal needs.

3. Provide orientation programs for the purpose of providing information to students and parents about career/vocational education course opportunities available in the school/district and the entry requirements for such programs.

4. Assist school administrators, teachers, parents and/or counseling team in determining career and technology education offerings to meet student, community and labor market needs.

5. Establish and work with a counseling advisory committee to assure the delivery of a career and technical guidance and counseling program that meets local needs.

6. Assist school staff in the selection and/or development of appropriate career guidance materials, such as brochures, audiovisual materials and other instructional aids needed to provide career/occupational and post-secondary training opportunities.

7. Assist students, parents and teachers with career/technical opportunities and experiences by scheduling appropriate career activities such as career days, field trips and career guest speakers.

8. Collaborate with either school and district staff to administer and interpret testing programs for students.

9. Promote equal access to all career/technical programs and activities based on student career interest and aptitude assessment and ability to succeed in such programs for all students, including students who are members of special populations.

10. Develop and implement classroom presentations and activities related to the delivery of a comprehensive career development guidance program and the identified student competency areas.

11. Develop and implement presentations for parent/teacher organizations, community and civic organizations promoting career development at all levels.

12. Assist students and their parents in the selection and enrollment process into post-secondary educational programs and/or career/job placement activities and services.

13. Assist in coordinating and collecting appropriate follow-up data on students who have completed a state approved program of study.

14. Maintain personal contact with program completers to assure success in post-secondary career and/or training activities.

15. Foster collaborative educational efforts among staff by supporting the district's philosophy and mission and its commitment to site-based shared decision-making.

16. Keep the principal/director informed regarding the status of all projects or initiatives undertaken and of directives or requests received internally or externally.

17. Pursue professional development by participating in appropriate in-service opportunities and keeping abreast of changes and developments in education as reflected in research, literature and best practice.

18. Use accepted theories and techniques appropriate to school counseling.

19. Follow McAllen ISD customer service standards.

20. Perform other duties assigned by immediate supervisor (primary evaluator).
