Certification:

  • Certification by a nationally recognized certification board with one of the following credentials: Registered Sleep Technologist (RST), Registered Polysomnographic Technologist (RPSGT), or Sleep Disorders Specialist (SDS)
  • Current CPR or BLS certification

Responsibilities:
  1. Collect, analyze, and integrate patient information to address patient-specific needs, including physical/mental limitations, current emotional/physiological status, and pertinent medical/social history.
  2. Determine final testing parameters/procedures in collaboration with the ordering physician or clinical director and according to laboratory protocols.
  3. Review patient history and verify medical orders, following sleep center protocols related to the sleep study.
  4. Verify patient identification upon arrival, collect documents, and obtain consent for the study.
  5. Explain procedures and orient patients for either in-center or out-of-center sleep testing.
  6. Select and calibrate appropriate equipment for testing, ensuring proper functioning and making adjustments as necessary.
  7. Apply electrodes and sensors according to accepted published standards.
  8. Perform routine positive airway pressure (PAP) interface fitting and desensitization.
  9. Follow procedural protocols (e.g., Multiple Sleep Latency Test (MSLT), Maintenance of Wakefulness Test (MWT), parasomnia studies, PAP and oxygen titration) to ensure the collection of appropriate data.
  10. Perform data acquisition while monitoring study-tracing quality to ensure signals are artifact-free, identifying, correcting, and documenting artifacts.
  11. Document routine observations, including sleep stages, clinical events, changes in procedure, and other significant events to facilitate scoring and interpretation of polysomnographic results.
  12. Implement appropriate interventions, including actions necessary for patient safety and therapeutic intervention (e.g., positive airway pressure, oxygen administration).
  13. Score sleep/wake stages by applying professionally accepted guidelines.
  14. Score clinical events (e.g., respiratory events, cardiac events, limb movements, arousals) utilizing AASM standards.
  15. Generate accurate reports by tabulating sleep/wake and clinical event data.
  16. Provide age-specific care in the treatment, assessment, and education of neonatal, pediatric, adolescent, adult, and geriatric patients.
  17. Perform portable monitoring equipment preparation and data download.
  18. Provide patient education and instruction appropriate for out-of-center sleep testing.
  19. Adhere to cleaning and disinfection procedures for portable monitoring devices.
  20. Adhere to AASM scoring parameters for out-of-center sleep testing, identifying artifacts, inadequate signals, study failures, and generating accurate reports.
  21. Comply with applicable laws, regulations, guidelines, and standards regarding safety and infection control.
  22. Perform routine equipment care and maintenance and inventory evaluation.
  23. Assist with inpatient sleep studies, both clinical and research.
