  • Promote community health by connecting our members to nutrient rich foods and opportunities for greater physical and emotional wellness
Food Bank’s member network includes nearly 1,000 community organizations and it is our goal to ensure we provide opportunities for them to meet the needs of the most vulnerable citizens of New York City. The Community Nutritionist provides nutrition education workshops at Food Bank member agencies and other organizations throughout New York City, including food pantries, shelters and community agencies to encourage greater acceptance and knowledge of the benefits of healthy eating. This includes the provision of nutrition education, curriculum and cooking demonstrations using common pantry items and highlighting food safety practices to households served by our membership.

As the Community Nutritionist, you will be a key member of the Community Nutrition Team and will perform the following services for the Food Bank in the capacity of a Public Health Nutritionist:
  • Assist in the implementation of a comprehensive nutrition education and obesity prevention program for low-income individuals accessing emergency food programs
  • Identify food pantries, senior centers, soup kitchens and other agencies who will participate in nutrition education activities
  • Schedule and conduct in-person nutrition education sessions with member agencies
  • Participate in activities sponsored by the Food Bank, community groups and other partners to facilitate program objectives
  • Conduct at least 12 nutrition education sessions each month reaching at least 70-100 participants using lesson plan materials provided
  • Utilize learner-centered and facilitated group discussion teaching techniques to enhance effectiveness of nutrition education sessions
  • Develop and update educational materials (handouts, recipes, flyers & power point presentations)
  • Independently seek opportunities for professional development to improve effectiveness in the performance of job duties
  • Maintain monthly outlook calendar
  • Identify community events that support program goals for the intended target audience
  • Provide written reports on nutrition education activities
  • Actively participate in all required department and team conference calls and events
  • Strive to manage all resources wisely for the maximum use of the program
  • Participate in other nutrition education related duties as “assigned” (ex. curriculum redesign, recipe development, etc.)
This role will help Food Bank For New York City reach our strategic goals by leading these three critical areas:
  • Workshop Scheduling and Planning: The Community Nutritionist will be responsible for recruiting community organizations in Food Bank’s membership to participate in nutrition education workshops, assessing the effectiveness of workshop delivery, and taking initiative to think creatively in order to enhance impact of community nutrition education
  • Workshop Facilitation: This role will be responsible for coordinating all aspects of workshop delivery including purchasing food, transporting workshop equipment, delivery of nutrition lessons, conducting cooking demonstrations, administration of participant surveys, and ensuring excellent communication with member agency staff and clientele
  • Reporting: The Community Nutritionist role requires thorough, timely tracking, reporting and documentation of all activities
ADDITIONAL DUTIES:
  • Travel throughout Food Bank’s member network to facilitate workshops and conduct agency site visits to assess readiness
  • Travel to Food Bank For New York City headquarters for workshop material replenishment, at least 2 to 3 times a month
  • Support cross departmental trainings and member agency community events
  • Ensure managerial staff are provided with regular training reports detailing attendance, outcomes, and connection to additional programming
  • Work in close partnership with Member Engagement, Program Evaluation, Operations and other Programs teams to refer or share outcomes to further engage with member network
  • Create monthly reports as required by management that accurately reflect activity and performance and assist in the preparation of department budget as needed; produce monthly expense reports and complete monthly database entries
  • This is a hybrid remote role, primarily field based, attendance to monthly in-person team meetings and organizational events is required
  • Represent the Food Bank at public functions as assigned/appropriate
  • Perform other duties as required


EXPERIENCE, EDUCATION AND TRAINING QUALFICATIONS:
  • Registered Dietitian preferred OR BS in Nutrition OR BS in Public Health with a minimum 15 credits in nutrition
  • Must have 2 years community nutrition/public health experience
  • Strong computer skills
  • Must be able to lift 25 to 30 pounds in order to transport workshop materials
  • Travel throughout New York City required
  • Valid driver’s license and vehicle strongly recommended (travel expenses will be reimbursed - including MTA, mileage, and parking expenses within the 5 boroughs)
