Job Summary This paragraph summarizes the general nature, level and purpose of the job. The Pharmacy Technician I is the entry, developmental, and training level of the Pharmacy Technician Job Family that performs, under supervision of a pharmacist, non-sterile compounding, and central pharmacy operations including preparing medication doses, and responding to nursing requests. Demonstrates a basic understanding of the responsibilities regarding medication and pharmacy operations. Essential Functions The essential functions listed are typical examples of work performed by positions in this job classification. Must perform all duties and responsibilities in accordance with the hospital’s policies and procedures, including its Service Standards and its Code of Conduct. • Compounds non-sterile, non-hazardous drugs and repackages medications using pharmaceutical mathematic calculations for pharmacist approval. • Inventories supplies by checking for shortages, rotating stock, and removing expired medications. • Accurately prepares and distributes medications. • Documents compounding and medications in computer systems. • Runs basic pharmacy operation reports. • Responds to nursing requests by distributing doses to patients, successfully following security protocols. • Performs basic controlled substance distribution and delivery. • Fills medication trays and ensures accuracy. • Utilizes pharmacy resources for accurate documentation. Minimum Qualifications Any combination of education and experience that would likely provide the required knowledge, skills and abilities as well as possession of any required licenses or certifications is qualifying. Education: High School Diploma or GED equivalent. Experience: None required. License/Certification: Licensed as a Pharmacy Technician by the California Board of Pharmacy -OR- Licensed as Pharmacy Intern by the California Board of Pharmacy -OR- Licensed as a Pharmacist by the California Board of Pharmacy. Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities These are the observable and measurable attributes and skills required to perform successfully the essential functions of the job and are generally demonstrated through qualifying experience, education, or licensure/certification. • Ability to adapt to and deal with change and ambiguity. • Ability to perform routine mathematical calculations; weighing, measuring and documentation with accuracy. • Ability to plan, organize, prioritize, work independently and meet deadlines. • Ability to solve problems and identify solutions. • Ability to speak and write effectively at a level appropriate for the job. • Ability to work effectively with individuals at all levels of the organization. • Ability to work in a fast-paced work environment. • Ability to work with devices, information systems, automated and technical equipment utilized in pharmacy. • Knowledge of computer systems and software used in functional area. • Knowledge of local, state and federal regulatory requirements related to areas of functional responsibility. • Knowledge of Medical terminology and abbreviations. • Knowledge of methods and procedures involved in proper handling and storing of pharmaceutical supplies.
