A Brief Overview
The supervisor sets the professional standard by which the section operates by providing technical, operations and financial leadership for their assigned laboratory section. The supervisor establishes the working environment in conjunction with established hospital and departmental polices and strictly adheres and enforces those policies.

What you will do

  • Technical/Scientific
    • Takes an advanced role as a resource for teaching, demonstrating and instructing on technique to technical staff, residents and other staff as needed.
    • Responsible for the direct supervision of technical staff of Gross room and Autopsy room. This includes daily job performance, scheduling and evaluation.
    • Ensures that all work is performed in the section is accurate and completed within established or agreed upon turn-around times.
    • Reviews all procedures and makes additions and corrections as necessary.
    • Implements new methods, techniques or equipment and makes recommendations to the Division Manager and Directors.
    • Oversees equipment maintenance and contracts as well as supply issues.
    • Serves as a technical resource throughout organization and profession community.
    • May publish/present scientific presentations/posters.
    • Orients new employees and assures completion of all competency assessment and mandatory educations.
    • Other technical duties as required by the Division Manager and Directors.
  • Education
    • Orients and oversees supervision of students from professional schools.
    • Assists in the continuing education of the section staff. Creates and presents self-developed programs and identifies and enables continuing education opportunities.
    • Other education duties as required as required by the Division Manager and Directors.
  • Fiscal
    • Assists the manager in planning for and preparing an operating and capital budget for the upcoming fiscal year.
    • Assist in the preparation of capital purchases requisitions when assigned and tracks purchasing and delivery progress.
    • Helps monitor the operating budget and reconciles variance.
    • Maintains appropriate staffing levels and hours worked. Assists in reconciling labor variance for the gross laboratory.
    • Other fiscal duties as required by the Division Manager and Directors.
  • Regulatory/Quality Assurance
    • Assures that all licensing and accreditation requirements are in full compliance.
    • Assures that the section proficiency is fully compliant.
    • Identifies quality assurance markers and assures participation it the departments Quality Assurance program.
    • Ensure compliance with all safety regulations.
    • Other regulatory/quality assurance duties as required by the Division Manager or Directors.
  • Leadership
    • Is responsible for creating and maintaining a safe and professional work environment that has an efficient workflow.
    • Motivates and mentors the staff to achieve high quality, high efficiency and high morale
    • Constantly reviews and improves systems to achieve optimal operation and institutional goals.
    • Demonstrates a leadership presence in the face of change, crisis, conflict and problem solving.
Education Qualifications
  • Master's Degree Pathologists' Assistant, or similar field of study. Required
Licenses and Certifications
  • Pathologist's Assistant (PA) - American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP) upon hire - Preferred
Experience Qualifications
  • At least three (3) years experience as a pathologists' assistant in a complex medical center Required and
  • Experience handling large and complex surgical pathology specimens and performing post-mortem examinations in a medium or high complexity laboratory. Required
  • At least five (5) years experience as a pathologists' assistant in a complex medical center Preferred and
  • Experience handling large and complex surgical pathology specimens and performing post-mortem examinations in a medium or high complexity laboratory. Preferred
Skills and Abilities
  • Proficiency in computer use, including voice recognition applications, internet and multiple-interfaced systems, Laboratory Information System, Excel, and MS Word or equivalent applications. (Required proficiency)
  • Have knowledge of Photographic equipment. Be able to work independently without constant supervision in times of high volume, interruptions, and deadlines. (Required proficiency)
  • Attention to detail and ability to work accurately, to prioritize and to multi-task. (Required proficiency)
